Wolf Hoffmann's Stage Gear Run Down

on its own the kemper can sound and feel great but i profiled a cameron atomica and ran it through a tube power amp and 4x12 to feel that way about it.

the live fail for me happened when i ran sound for a friend of mine who is an incredible guitar player, musician, producer. He was moving from a killer carr combo/pedalboard rig to the kemper for silent stage/in ear use.
not only did he disappear in the mix, but trying to push him up brought out these very unnatural overtones and i spent much of the performance trying to remove the bad frequencies.

His tone today is missing something, nothing like Restless & Wild or Balls. Songs are missing something also. His ex-wife Gabby wrote the lyrics way back when. Maybe because he is the only original band member ?
Old days Superlead 100 Marshall with MXR distortion + His rhythm and lead playing were killer back in the day.

I swear, "Fast as a Shark" turns me into a madman. If i was playing that in my car, going 100 mph and hit a tree, I'd climb out and walk off like nothing happened. I used to go run with that song on my iPod and would end up sprinting, lol.

What sort of mods did his 200 Watt custom Marshall have besides the 200 watt transformers?

Were there preamp gain mods or was it basically a 200 watt JCM800?
It’s not 200 watts, it’s an actual stereo Marshall, 100 watts per side. There are two output transformers crammed in there. Idk about any preamp gain mods but I’d hope so… Eddy Lenz, where are you ???

Metal Heart is still one of my go to albums. The production on that album still kicks ass nearly 40 years later. It's ridiculous how good that album is. Dieter Dierks produced so many great albums for the Scorps and Accept.

Kemper sounds pretty good here... Think it just depends on the profiles you're using.

According to Hoffman he used to crank the Super lead volume then control the overall amp volume with the level on the MXR Distortion+....If that is what he did... he got some stellar results with his tone doing that.:2thumbsup:

It's sounds good but it seems to have less depth to the palm mutes, like less speaker excursion, dynamics as compared to a live mic'd tube amp.:dunno:

Were the speaker cab's mic'd or where they running direct to an IR? I imagine the speaker cabs are there for stage monitoring or just for show.....

I believe that the cabs are for show. They are on IEM.

fast as a shark is one of the best metal songs of all time. that dual guitar solo always gets a few rewinds and playbacks while i'm listening to that song. especially the live version from Staying A Life where they play it even faster. thats a high wire, delicate solo for sure... ONE wrong note or millisecond out of time from either of those guitarists and the whole thing falls apart.

whole band is missing something these days. i think wolf is just going through the motions and its a business. the first few albums with their new singer were pretty good, but it got generic and forgettable fast after that. i think wolf comes of as a great guy, but the ex members seem to describe him as being pretty cut throat. must be a german thing. you hear me play for 10 minutes and you'll know that i like wolf hoffman though...huge influence on my playing.

AS a kid he was my hero. Also he has always been in my top5 all time favorites. His rhythm playing was just as good as his solos.
Restless & Wild is my favorite album, that whole album is in your face! The twin Vs looked killer too

One day I will own a white Gibson Flying V!

i had the edwards white v with the block inlay and white binding on the fret board 100% because of him. played it on stage a few times in the early 2000's when it was so NOT cool to be like that.
it was a sweet guitar too, shouldn't have sold it. my cork sniffer got the best of me at the time.
wolf is a well rounded player with a german sense of melody and an appreciation for classical music. my grandpa loved what germans call "Schlager", and i heard a lot of that stuff growing up. he had all these german yoddeling folk music / beer drinking song records i used to listen to as a child, and i think thats why i'm so in tune to that german and swedish melodic metal stuff.

but then theres udo who is a force, and still killing it 150 pounds later. peter bales is a monster, stefan is a monster, herman frank is a monster. all of the hired guns in both bands are good. its really a win win for the fans. "ACCEPT" like i said eventually their style gets played out. its hard to evolve from "tr00 classic metal". its a heavily gatekept community. i've been there.

Right on man

I wonder what ever happened to Jorg Fisher? He just dropped off the planet.
