A Royer 121 or 122 can handle the SPL no problem. They sound killer on cabs.

Eric - have you tried any condensers or ribbons with the Dead Room? Of course it would have to be a high SPL one, but just curious if you tried it. Is there even enough room inside their to put a condenser/ribbon, as you would want a good 6 inches prolly back from the cone.

Tx

i tried a condenser in there...and it farted like mad because of the compression in the dead room. i'd be very afraid to put a ribbon that close to the speaker in the dead room. i'd stick to dynamic mics.... i agree w/ audioholic...ribbons are best to pic up room ambiance. but that's me

The problem with the isolation cab may have more to do with the fact that there is virtually no air inside, more than high SPL - dynamics probably handle working in a semi-vacuum better than conds or ribbons.

Agreed. Dynamics didn't care at all for my tests. The 57 has performed VERY admirably. Don't screw with what works :).

Egnater's, SM 57, VHT 2/90/2, and Celestion G12T75s. I've been fans of the last 3 for years and years. Now that I have my eggie...I'm in tonal heaven :).

The M4 and the VHT power amps are a match made in heaven

Seeing how it can take El34 and 6L6, is it possible to put Ch. A as EL34 and Ch. B as 6L6, or does it have to both be the same??

I totally agree w/ that!!! My VHT 2/90/2 is perfect as a power amp for my M4 :). I personally don't use EL34's or 6L6, as I use 6550's in my 2/90/2. I can't speak for the 2/50/2 (ask John C) but the 2/90/2 does have 2 bias pots, so you could run one side as 34's and one as 6L6's. Me personally, I just run 6550's all the way, as they are the power tube for me :).

I do run TS 5881s in my Mod50. That's THE powertube for the Mod50 :).

I have a 2/50/2 and run EL34s in one side and EL84s in the other, but the EL84s are using GT adapters, which do not require a re-bias. I am pretty sure that the 2/50/2 does have independent bias adjustments for each side, though I can't swear to that. The 2/50/2 used to have a switch to select EL34 or 6L6 bias, but they stopped offering that a few years ago - Steve from VHT said he did not particularly care for the way 6L6s sounded in the VHT power amps, and that those power amps were specifically designed around an EL34 design, so he stopped putting the switch in. He also mentioned that the 6L6s had become somewhat unreliable (at that time) - I have heard the opposite recently - that EL34s have been unreliable while 6L6s have been pretty solid.

I really like having the option of the EL84s in one side. It really sounds great on higher gain settings - it smooths and compresses more than the EL34s. As an added bonus, the GT adapters reduce the power to about 20W, so I can get creamier distortion at lower volumes than when running the EL34s - the EL34s still have to be cranked pretty good to get to the sweet spot. For clean though, the EL34 side is definitely better.

For the 2/90/2, it was designed for KT88's and 6550s. KT88's sound like crap in that amp in my honest opinion. 6550s are the bomb in that amp :) Never tried EL34's or 6L6's in my 2/90/2. The 2/50/2 i had years ago, had to be modded w/ resistor changes since the 2/50/2's had el34 / 6l6 switches in and didn't have bias pots like I'm pretty sure they changed it to today.

I have updated the MP3 on this thread with the newer version. Added a lot of countermelody to the song and added a bridge and ending!. It's all done except i need to add a solo to the bridge :).

The DLX ChA is the clean tone w/ Lexicon MPXG2 Verb and Delay. The funky sounding lead parts...is the EG5 w/ Delay and a Octafuzz (the Lexicon MPXG2 Octafuzz was what I was using). I did double tracked it....and add another double tracked part an octave higher.

Did some minor tweaks to the drums...brought up the bass (thanks John C for that), and it's friggin ballsy as all hell!!!

Oh...anyone know of a good singer that would like to cyber-collaborate :).

Excellent clippage! The leads are terrific. The verses had kind of an A Perfect Circle thing going on and the chorus sounded very Brian May to me. Very nice!

Thanks man :). I really like the changes I made in the newer version. Just sounds better all around :). Especially the added counter-melodies.

Just heard the new version, sounds more ballsy! I love the tone your getting out of the EG5, care to share your settings on the EG5 for the Rythm? Also how high is the volume put up on the Master of the M4 and the VHT?

Thanks man :). So for the EG5, I used ChB exclusively on the rhythm tracks. A Chinese 12ax7a is in V1, and a Ruby 12ax7a in V2. Gain --> 2 oclock, Bass --> 2 oclock, mids -- 10 oclock, treble --> 2 oclock, master on Eg5 --> 2 oclock.

On the M4 I run the master at high noon, and run the VHT flat out 100%, with the voice in the out position, prescense about 1 oclock and the depth at about 2:30. I use the Lexicon MPXG2's Master Volume to set the loudness going to the VHT since its post eggie preamp. it was about 9-10 oclock. It wasn't really that loud when I recorded it. Enough to get the 6550s pumping, but nothing ear deafening. I run the VHT on full power mode. I only use one side to record w/ the Grendel dead room. The keys to my tone are the following. My custom made mahogony strat w/ EMG (81, SA, SLV) pickups and the preamp booster. The Lexicon MPXG2. and Celestion G12T75's. Those really helped me get where I'm at...(plus all the eggie love I'm getting from my M4:) ).

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I really need a Iso cab, at those volumes, the Eggy is a different beast, unluckily I can't run my volumes that high yet until I get a Iso cab. So I am guessing even with the ISO Cab running it that loud still has a lot of volume bleeding through right?

The grendel does as advertised and drops around 30 db of sound. When I open the cab up, it shakes the house, bothers my wife upstairs..etc etc. close the lid, and all the low end is absorbed.... There is a bit of bleedthrough, but I can easily talk over it with someone in the room. Its quiet enough for my wife / baby to sleep upstairs. The whole song here was recorded while my wife was sleeping :). When its closed, the bleedthrough sounds like you are playing through a 4-6 inch speaker w/ no low end at all :). When I track w/ my headphones on, I can not hear anything but the headphones. The Grendel works really really well. I'm VERY pleased :).
