If you’re a youngling high gain freak...

:D   LOL!

I'm a 42 year old father of 3. I'm looking to add something that I don't have to my current amps, which as I said are a Mesa Road King II, Studio Pre and Carvin Legacy. At least for my first module.

I guess that would be whatever module is decidedly "Egnater" whatever that might be, or say a Bogner tone, or SLO or Marshall. I don't think I can cover those sounds with the gear I have right now. Unless someone thinks the Erect for example is so different than a Mesa Rectifier, etc.

Thanks for all the info.

Dave

Decidedly Egnater would be the EG3/4 since it is based on his original TOL amp designs of the past and in my opinion sounds a lot like the amps that come out of his amp build classes. That said, although I don't own one, I hear the SL2 is a must have standard arsenal module.

Okay I need a Vox and an SL2 now ... Dammit!!!!!!!!!!

If you want the Egnater sound in a high gain package, go EG5. My lead guitar player and I were playing with all of the modules on Saturday and we kept going back to the EG5.

So far 3 votes for SL2, 2 for the EG3/4, 1 for the EG5 and 1 for the Erect.

Keep it going.

BTW, would you all agree that the SL2 is closest to the "brown" sound?

Another vote for EG 3/4 especially if you want brown sound. IMO the B channel of the 3/4 is the best for soloing; sweet harmonic overtones, perfect mid voicing. My only concern in recommending that module for you is that you’re using it in an M4 opposed to a MOD50; Eric (aeroic) was just saying in another thread that he didn’t like it in his M4 but loved it in the MOD50 and it seems like I’ve read that before.

I run my M4 into the loop of my RM50B, best of both worlds? The 50W power section is sweet, sweet, sweet...can't say it enough times!

I can't imagine it sounding better but one day I'll have a MOD50 and find out

At the moment, Erect

It could change anytime soon though

Really? How do you like it for leads?

Fine :)

Why, don't you like it for leads?

Well I don't have it yet but I've read others are not crazy about Rectos for leads in general. I love my Road King II though.

EG5 can cover a TON of ground! very versatile...could play a 3 set cover show all night with this guy!

For me its hard. The EG5 is soo damn versatile, but the SL2 sounds sooo damn good. And for clean stuff, the T/D is amazing. But if I "had" to choose.....hrmmm....it'd be the EG5!

Exactly. EG5 all the way.

It really depends on your playing style. EG5 is super compressed and upper-mid Bognery edgy with a bass so tight it is like a cocaine hooker in a leather catsuit. The EG5 is pretty much the chainsaw to the face.

The SL2 is going to be browner and more percussive. The former Navy SEAL in me thinks this one is somewhat more like a combination of an M60 7.62 machine gun and a belt of concussion grenades.

Choose your weapon. Fight your fight. Repeat. :gethim:

Considering the SL2 can be EQed to sound like or close to the EG3/4...I would say SL2 if between those two modules - although I own neither, yet.

Which has more gain in channel A - EG3/4 or SL2?

Anyone have comparison samples?
