Going direct in w/ no pedals to a 50 watt non-master volume Wizard Vintage Classic. Does the tone sound heavy enough for Metallica? Or does it sound too Classic?

EDIT:
Boosted version w/ a Boss SD-1

I voted Yes...too Classic.

First off, it does sound great. I liked it! Damn I'd like to play through that set-up. For Metallica, the core sound is there. Just a little too classic as you say. With a clean boost from an SD-1 or something like that, you'd be in some good Metal land.

for mid 90s and later metallica id say yeah, for the thrashier stuff though id say it needs a little more sizzle and less mids. for a "classic" tone though that sounds amazing

On it's own yes, but I wouldn't be surpised if that tone is layered in, on top of Boogies etc when they record anyway. Sounds awesome. Even with a boost you might not be able to lose enough mids and get the serious bass jun jun of a high gainer. The plexi inspired amps even with the mids off seem to still retain them.

Now if you boosted, loaded the head down and then took a line out through an EQ and then a good poweramp you would be there easily.

Thanks for the comments and vote guys keep 'em coming!

Sounds great, but for Metallica no. The VC sounds alot more aggressive than I thought it would, but you have to work for it I think. How are the mids compare to the Metal and MC? Have a big gas for this amp to now.

It has more of that Classic Honk. I'll have to plug in the Master Volume Wizard to be sure.

For what you're looking to do on the clip, yes its a bit wimpy. You are out of scope of what the amp was built to do. Of course, nothing wrong with this, but again it is out of the realm of what it was designed to do.....stock. However, being a plexi type amp that it is, I am going to recommend a cardinal sin. Boost it. Good ole clean boost. Hit it, hit it hard. The amp turns into a pissed off animal.

Killer tones for stock and unboosted though!
Josh

and for being unboosted, still getting a lot of harmonics in there... This of course, I see maybe to be more in the hands.

Keep it up and post a clip if you get to boost and do that clip again!

You say non-master? Did you get your hands on the older one or are you just maxing the master and bypassing the master essentially?

well the amp is a non master amp being the Vintage model. I don't want people not familier to get the wrong idea about Wizard. Wizard does have a Master volume model: the Modern Classic. This amp does have an attenuator master on back that I am using instead of my atteuator. Does this make sense?

I voted too classic also. I think you should run the new Cameron with that same cab and play the same thing over and compare. ;) But like Josh said it sounds great for what it is. I think you could cut a clip playing some bad company on the vintage classic and call for a vote and you would win in a land slide.

Cool, that clears it up. It's the newer Vintage 50 with the output control "Master" on the back.

Boosted clip plz! :gethim:

On its own it sounds great. For Metallica, it is way to dry and punchy with no give and needs more saturation. :)

perfect description for as it sits stock.

Again, sounds great but not for Metallica. Even the Modern and Metal, may have enough gain for old school Metallica, but the type of gain structure is still quite different than anything Mesa related. For Metallica crunch you need to strip out the low end in the preamp section and boost it later. Hard to do with a stock Wizard.

Excellent tone, but yes, too classic on its own. However, this would slay with a more metal tone blended in with it. If you picked apart all the guitar tracks on Enter Sandman, I'm sure you'd hear more classic tones like that.

I agree with most... On its own no. But with a boost of some sort yes. And it sounds like it would do it well. Very nice tone, just needs a bit more hair for metallica.
