Mesa 4x12 Straight cab vs. Mesa 4x12 slant cab.

The straight will give you the impression that your tone is darker and thicker than it actually is.
The slant will allow you to hear the sound coming from the speakers more accurately.
Under a mic, they will both sound the same.
I think AJ uses straights. You really can't go wrong with either

The tops of the slants can be a little shallow for some heads.

The old style slants are square all on the outside. The slant is on on the face
Jones used both slant and straight

The only way to know which one you like is to hear it for yourself. A lot of guys will say they like the straights only cause they like the look.

If you play sitting down then the straights are fine but when you are standing up I don't like them.

I myself have a Mesa Slant and think it sounds kick ass especially with Mesa amps.

I have an oversized recto slant and I love it. Had it longer than any of the cabs ive ever owned.

For all intents and purposes, they'll sound the same with a mic. On stage or standing up, the slant will let you hear more of the speaker because they're pointing up at you. I prefer straight cabs for the looks mostly. :)

Straight looks way better, but I do like having my speakers facing at me while standing...
Slant was never an option for me because I thought it looked ugly, but it may be most beneficial for me.
Thanks guys

You can still order the straight side / slant front cabs. It takes about 6-8 weeks for them to arrive after you order them.

I have done it.

I like the old steel grill straight cabs the best, out of the rectos, and traditionals ive owned.

We had some of this discussion a while back about slant vs. straight and dialing in an amp. I think it turned into a big shit-fest. More often than not, with straight cabs a guy will be dialed in much brighter than need be. If you are playing on a 3 or 4 foot shallow stage, the peeps in front are getting pelted with the excess top end because you can't really tell it while standing. You almost have to get on your knees to hear what is happening. A slant will help you out in this regard and in general for hearing yourself as long as you are near the cab. As someone mentioned, mic'd and the FOH, there won't be any difference. If you have road cases for your heads, sitting your cabs up on these will remedy that, or some sort of riser. Someone mentioned Adam Jones, and you will always see his straight cab on risers. You can try those "dispersion bra's" or whatever they call them too.

I like, and use slant cabs for function and form. I have two straights as well, but only use them as a second cab, in conjunction with a slant.

Yeah....Function and Form  Good way to summarize it and exactly what I was driving at in that post.

I have the straight traditional ones. Traditional because I dont think the bottom end gets as muddy as the oversized, straight because of looks (ha)

Tried both out today with my guitar, wish I brought my head too.
Slant for the win! I was playing into a dual rec head and the sound was much brighter on the slant than the straight because the speakers on the slant hit my face and the straight hits my knees lol

hi guys, sorry to stir this up again!
I'm having the same predicament. Buying a Mark V 25 or 35 soon, and am trying to decide on a 4x12 to go with it, purely for home use, and yes I know both are totally overkill, but I've wanted to own a Mesa 4x12 for about 15 years! So no trying to convince me otherwise please......

Those of you who know, would a slant cab be better for home use?? I've never played through a Mesa straight, just the recto slant 4x12, which is the oversized one, and sounded awesome to my ears in the shop! Any other option will take a lot longer to get my hands on, as the Standard Slant is the one in stock

cheers all

-I think the entire "straight cabs are playing at your feet" theory is a lame attempt to justify there A cab, its about internal volume and a 2 piece, angled baffle with uneven sides, you don't see many bass cabs that are angled do ya?.... Why aren't all bass cabs "playing at there feet"? aren't guitar frequencies more audible the bass frequencies?

You can't go wrong with either really. I took a chance on an OS Recto slant 4x12, an older one, and it kicks ass. I got it for only $250 and it's in decent shape. A LOT of people don't want to ship 4x12's so you can find some great deals on them locally. But when I gigged out I did prefer slant because often times I couldn't hear the straight cabs I used.

Playing at home will still have the same issue. I have to stand on the opposite side of the room in order to hear what a straight cab is really doing but not so with a slant.
