Mesa 4x12 Straight cab vs. Mesa 4x12 slant cab.

I like both. I've owned more Mesa traditional straight cabs, but I also have a Mesa oversized slant/straight which is killer.

It appears that the industry is slowly but surely moving towards straight cabs in general. Many manufacturers, especially boutique, aren't even offering a slant cab anymore.

I much prefer straight, for one it looks way better, and I prefer NOT having treble blasting me in the face killing my ears.

If you gig slants are best IMO. Just easier to hear yourself. I have straight cabs but never gig with them. The low end is deeper with them but in a live situation I've stopped using straight cabs simply because I have to turn up much more just to hear myself.

Genuinely curious about this. Could you just turn down the treble? If your straight cab is elevated on a stage, isn't it blasting someone in the face? Maybe it sounds too trebly to them but you can't hear that on the stage? I would think the slant gives a better impression of what everyone is hearing and let's you adjust accordingly.

I agree that straight cabs look cooler to me (which is subjective), but I've noticed that if you step away from them, the sound I hear gets a lot more piercing, whereas a slant seems more consistent so easier for me to set and be happy with across the room. But it's been a while since I've had a straight.

cheers guys, i suppose the only trouble is moving the heavy bastard around alone! that's where the 2x12 vert comes in useful i guess. I need to go play through one really. may not look or sound as good but it'll be a lot more practical!

Maybe it's not treble but just the sound of it. Play your straight cab then bend down and stick your head in front of it.

I prefer straight cabs. with that said, I love sitting directly in front of a 4x12 and I can hear a difference between the straight and slant even sitting in front. This is my quandary since I find the sound 20 feet away from the cabinet to sound a lot worse then sitting in front...

Stage? What's a stage? I only play Madison Square studio. I don't like having a 412 pointed directly at me, it's too direct. I usually play all sitting or standing to one side and next to my 412's.

Straight Slant Cabs

Now which one's are older? The straight/slant or the pure slant one's? I have a slant and it's really old, rated at 280 watts with a stereo jack.

Still rockin' the same Trad. slant all these years later. No urge to purge!

I believe the straight/slant was the original Recto cab.
I was thinking same thing.... But not sure.

straight/slant and normal slant were the eariler style and I believe now they are only making full straights and slants.

Yours is an early-to-mid 90s. The oversized was the original cab for the Recto series, also called the Rectifier Standard later on. The slant/straight was made with it for the purposes of stacking. The oversized straight cabs didn't come around until much later on, I believe until the very early 00s if memory serves me right (speculated to have been at the request of Tremonti).

Reporting in for the Slant Trads

Nice slant Trad. That would be a later one with black piping made after the name change. Mine has gray piping as it was originally called a Stilleto slant. I believe some also had silver piping during that time.

You can still order the straight side / slant front cabs. It takes about 6-8 weeks for them to arrive after you order them.

I have done it.
I know it was 12 years ago but may i ask if you think those straight/slant cabs are still available? If so where to order them?
