Hm, I am from Europe, so I don't know a lot about your "power conditions" but can it be, that the one cable that works is the broken one? Here in Europe we have besides the two main stripes a third for protection. Might it be that this is actually broken in your only good cable and for what ever...

I haven't ever played a SL but the GF45 is awesome! One of the best, if not the best clean channels I know. The driven channels are super versatile and cover everything from vintage to VH territory. I guess there is little talk here, as the GF (at least the 45) has more a vintage vibe, not so...

I changed mine to EL34 (which takes a resistor clip) which improved the tone to my ears a lot. But it becomes more "classic" sounding with El34s, so might not be your thing. And as it needs to clip a resistor, I am not sure I should recommend. But another option....
