Joe Satriani: “They’re gonna see someone who’s hell-bent on being the most respectful guitar player to the legacy of Eddie”

I'd believe that if Joe Bonamassa didn't have so many signature guitars, amps, pickups sets maybe. Van Halen has only a couple hits that are relatively known to the average household and if you're going to look at it like that, then the average person doesn't even know that Eddie Van Halen was the lead guitarist 😆
Yeah.

So all told, Joe has sold 9 million records. And I quote Joe himself, "I've sold nine million records. The detractors can say what they want". An amazing task no doubt. In fact at this point lets be honest, Joe is arguably on course to top SRV's total of 15 million sold when all is said and done.

And then you have 1984; that album alone sold 15 million copies. I mean I could go on with their other album totals but really that pretty much says it all.

Record sales in an age where youtube exist? This is the problem in your head... You have different age groups and a whole other generation to consider that are more into music and have a larger familiarity pallette due to everything being handed through them. You keep on denying that fact in order to win your argument though 😄

When Joe is constantly posting videos of gear, his collection, live performances, etc. Van Halen is just getting views for your typical 2 or 3 big hits. This shouldn't be too hard to understand.

The test of time won the argument, not me. In the end EVH along with Jimi still tower over everyone. When that is not the case, get back with us. Further I would love for someone to transcend those heights again but even in our social media age, everything at your fingertips, it hasn't on that scale.

Btw/ with anything I have said, what have I denied? Right, nothing. Quite the contrary, I clearly stated that guitar has evolved well past Ed (as it has Jimi) and that younger players are still pushing the envelope, that's great. For someone who "thinks" they have all the answers it's amazing how much tunnel vision you have but you do you.

SRV definitely gets more plays in bars, Cafe and restaurants whether we're talking jukeboxes or the covers... it's Texas blues. I can't see Van Halen getting more plays these days. 80's rock/metal doesn't get alot of love these days.

Dude, more people bought the “Jump” single than even know who SRV is. I get you REALLY dig SRV, but you don’t function in reality.

@SteveGlitch - Welcome to Rig-Talk. Most dudes (75% maybe) really like and worship the EVH Van Halen. You'll just have to get used to it. EVH is the Goat in my book. Don't forget Jump is known by just about everyone. That, and songs like Jump and Unchained, are played at all kinds of sporting events around the world. You are perfectly happy though to consider Bonamassa or SRV better. I can't name one Joe B song.

This whole tour thing is great for Sammy. It is to celebrate Montrose, Red Rocker, VH, Chickenfoot. I'll probably pass on it and catch a few YT vids instead. Al Estrada (@Stradazone ) has toured with Dave, and is arguably better at nailing EVH, but he is not in Sammy's inner circle and if I had to guess, Sammy Hagar is the type of guy who doesn't want his touring guitarist to sound like Ed. :dunno:

Just as many heard SRV's playing in David Bowie's Lets Dance.

Also, I would never lump EVH in w/ Jimi. Jimi was a songwriter, guitar player, performer, amazing musician. EVH was a guitar player in a family band, who wasted many years doing dick. He was poor at jamming and improvising as well. Yes, he had the swing, his rhythm chops were impeccable. His gig was only as good as his lead vocalist. Guys like Jimi and SRV didn't have that problem. Jimi could jam w/ anybody. SRV as well.
Ed? most jams of his outside his band were pretty shitty.
Jimi made history with his guitar a few times. I can't think of any others that did that.

This sounds like a cartoon network insult, something my son would hear in a kids show 😆

It did happen and there's plenty of proof, but did he actually mimic him? Probably not. It was probably more of a state of mind thing. Unless you're gonna call Pete Townshend a liar, which I doubt...

Pete is a huge liar...lol...check his interviews when he got busted with his kiddie porn collection. He always struck me as a big time bragger....which he has earned the right to be.

Have you ever listened to who SRV idol was? It was Hendrix. If you ask most rock guitarists who their influence was, I'm willing to bet EVH's name is going to come up. For someone who thinks that they are such sloppy players, they sure have influenced a lot of great guitarists.

I highly doubt he lied about what Clapton said, definitely sounds like Eric. Eric was obsessed with Jimi for a bit. Just saying

I knew that and I disagree. There's so many great guitarists that Eddie isn't as much on the radar. And people can make any guitarists seem like they're overrated, doesn't make much sense but then again, it IS a forum lol

In Texas the Vaughan brothers and blues and c&w is cultural but any half serious player knows all those guitarists names. Here there are def more young guys who are similar in approach to both the bros than to EVH. There are also a lot of utility players who can do everything pretty well. There are always SRV requests at gigs. My son is 21 he used to play a tenor sax but prefers recording technology and loves both SRV and EVH guitar playing. He really loves Eruption and he really loves Live at the El Mocambo. How do you weigh it?

I guess in the end, someone will want to see Satriani do EVH so that's all that matters from a business perspective. Ain't my business so I guess I don't really have deep feelings about it but it's funny listening to the discussion going going gone here, very passionate, lol.

Just as many heard SRV's playing in David Bowie's Lets Dance.

And surely every single DJ on the radio followed the song with “That was David Bowie with Steve Ray Vaughn playing guitar” and not just “That was David Bowie with ‘Let’s Dance”, song that had it’s peak 40 years ago.

Opposed to a DJ saying the guitarist’s name every single time he announced Van Halen songs over the course of 3 decades they were putting out music.

Funnily enough, I’m just a casual VH fan. I don’t own all the records and I certainly haven’t heard every song, most of what I know are the hits. I think I have more SRV albums in my Apple Music than VH!

So you are in the other 25% :dunno:

Nothing wrong with that.

Kinda funny, I’ve got more love for Ed’s accomplishments and the mark he made than a lot of the music. There’s rarely a VH tune I hear that I don’t like, but I never got INTO VH with them being a favorite band or anything. Ed’s playing is really the only thing that draws me to the majority of the songs and I’m too far passed the “I’m a guitar player” phase for that to be satisfying enough.

Or a better way of saying it, there’s no fucking way I’d listen to the majority of VH’s work if Eddie weren’t in the band. As where a band like Pantera, I love every album and it’s not just Dime making that happen.
