What is your bug out plan?

I have a cabin I rent from a friend that has 5 or 6 fresh water springs of varying sizes nearby. One spring is right next to my cabin so for now, I pump water our of the spring into a 55 gallon drum in a tree and then gravity feed my sink/shower. I've water tested it many times and it is clearer than the stuff at home. Those springs then feed into our 'spring creek' that then feed into a larger river system close by that has abundant smallmouth bass, rock bass, gar?, and some catfish, trout, and an occasional perch. I have about 2-3 years worth of bait and tackle. I have 6 or 7 fishing rods along with spare parts, line, hooks, etc.. I'm also fairly proficient at catching crawfish (crawdads we call 'em). My neighbor has an extensive garden with more vegetables and herbs than we could ever eat in a season. She often tries to give it away in town or at church whatever. I have maybe 2 years of .22 and 9m ammo but admittedly, I'd like to double that stash if not triple. I have lots of knives and other tools but need more experience in foraging/hunting. I mean, I could kill and skin a squirrel, turkey or deer (which are plentiful) - I'm just rusty from not doing it much.



Need still:

  1. Shotgun/more ammo - 9 and 22
  2. Rain water cistern
  3. A way to store extra gasoline
  4. Solar panel farm to regenerate my extensive Ryobi tool/battery shit + battery farm + breakers + cabling
  5. More foraging/hunting time
  6. x chainsaws/chains/oils
  7. dual fuel generator
  8. Dehydrated foods
  9. more canned food
  10. extra jeans, boots, tarps, lighters, batteries, flint, coolers, sleeping bags, knives, blankets, foil, tin pans, fire logs, tiki and 2:1 and 5:1 gas, extra pots, vinegar, charcoal and fluid, tents, towels, acoustic guitar, battery packs, back packs, more canned food, extra can openers, sling shots, jackets, bug out bags, all portable water, sun screen, tooth brush/paste, soap, dish soap, mouse traps/bait, car jack, tire jack, jumper cables, ratchet straps, rope, chains, carabiners, coffee, filters, sugar, stevia, spices, cooking oil, left over fishing gear/bait, hats, porn, whiskey, bourbons, pipes, left over week, chips, pasta, whatever frozen foods I can save. Not necessarily in that order.
  11. @Floyd Eye - Paracord, but inside are 7 strands. Some cotton, one filament ( thnik fishing line) and one red waxed jute strand for fire starting

First rule of having a bug out plan is don't talk about your bug out plan. :-)

I will say mine is multi layered. I will defend where I am for as long as possible and it's just so happened to work out to where that is probably a lot longer than most. For the shit to hit the fan here in a way that encourages me to go mobile, everything about modern civilization in the region will have already been turned on it's head.

I do have a place to go and a plan to get there, but I'm in a pretty solid defensible situation right now.

Honestly your best bet ( and this applies to everyone really) is to group up. Make your way down here. Long as you can contribute to the group you will be defended. Sad to say but in an actual SHTF scenario it's not going to be like TV. The old lady down the street who's gutters you clean may be the nicest old lady in the world, but when the shit gets real you will have 2 choices. Support, feed and defend her at the detriment of your own survival or kill her humanely and take her shit.

In any event, you can have all the guns and ammo in the world and if you are by yourself or with a couple people, a larger, better armed group is coming and they will take your shit.
 
I will search for survivors and collectively we can form a new community with its own sets of laws, norms and mores and together build and buttress the New Resistance.

Or maybe just get some Chinese take-out, and watch re-runs of Two and a Half Men.

Yeah, probably the latter. Sans the Chinese.
 
I used to be more into it but my new bug out plan is my orthodox faith. You can have everything arranged for long term survival and cut yourself chopping wood and none of that stuff will really matter if you can't go the the ER or have someone who is a wizard with stitches next to you. You can have an INCH bag all set and then twist your ankle a mile down the road and it's junk you'll leave behind for someone else.

Saint Gabriel says many Christians will flee into the woods in the end times during the persecution and that a leaf will be enough food for a month and a lump of earth will be changed into bread. Seems like a more lightweight way to travel and a better guarantee once the supplies, and my body, gives out.

So bugging out for me now is just mostly having some extra fuel, ammo, dry goods on hand. It has paid off when money was tight, many times.

I have an 1150 gallon cistern already and can easily pipe my gutter to it if needed. Used it two days ago when the idiots from Spectrum broke the water main laying cable. Bought it after the big spring storm here a few years ago. I had a 100 gallon rubbermaid feed trough and we were at the bottom after a week without water. I had literally just bought it and a 5 gallon stock pot for boiling water for defeathering chickens when that storm hit. I always use a woodstove for heat, wouldn't own a place without one of those. We cooked and made good coffee on it when there was no power. We lose power and water many times a year. Texas infrastructure is garbage but it don't bother me cause I'm prepared.

Stihl chainsaw and plenty of blades, fuel, bar oil, and 2 cycle mix on hand. I have a little Honda generator as well. And we have had a 4x4 for quite a few years now. Country living will definitely keep you a little more prepared, on average.

I reckon you have some sort of backup for filling them tanks from your well when the power goes down and a backup for pumping when there is no more gas or diesel available. Those dogs do look like they would be good eating so you got the food supply covered once you are out of human and dog food.

@Floyd Eye "Avoid places like Branson, Kimberling City, Eureka Springs, Ft. Smith, etc."

I did look at Eureka Springs a bit and Branson as well but most of my focus is north-central AR around the Mountain View-Yellville regions. Any particular reasons you don't care for those? Just the population or what?

And I agree. Can't do it alone. I've told a select few outside of my family. At this point, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to provide for too many more, but like you said, if you contribute to the group, then everyone benefits. At least to a point right? My neighbor has more guns and ammo then I feel we would ever need.

And when I say SHTF = WWIII + contaminated water supply + nuclear shit + low food supply + high crime


I need to add extra chainsaw chains - good call out Von. Or at least a way to sharpen what I have until the gas runs out.
