$9k for an 89 Soldano SLO 100?

Serious question to the Soldano experts; are those late 80's models REALLY that much better than the 90's and beyond? I've only played a '95 and mid 2000's model and they sounded the same to me based off my memory. A great amp that needs volume to shine but always been overpriced IMO for what you get.
 
IMHO, the SLO100 has always been overpriced. With that said, there have been tons of them sold. So, a lot of people think they are worth the money. Some of my favorite recorded guitar tones have been recorded with one. However, I have never been able to get one to sound good.
 
Had an Avenger 100.
Nice amp when boosted. Not exactly brutal but it was pretty cool

Bingo.

I've always thought the main reason these amps got so famous is because of how early to the game they were. They did the super high gain preamp, big wattage clean poweramp thing before just about anybody else (not counting Mesa Marks), but without the "complexity" of a Mesa Mark amp, so the average dumbass guitar player wouldn't be immediately scared off by it. It was the right product at the right time in an otherwise empty market so of course it sold a lot and became a household name to serious guitar players.

But... $8k+ is insane, ESPECIALLY now that you can get them brand new for a lot less, and by all accounts the remakes sound every bit as good as the old ones, AND the new ones have a factory added Depth control AND the new ones don't have the most retarded fx loop design of all time (the old ones routed the loop before the tonestack).

That seller is 100% trading on nostalgia and people who don't know better.

I've played Mikes personal SLO, late 90s SLOs, and modern BAD SLOs, and they all sound remarkably similar :dunno:

The old ones with DeYoung tranformers sound a tiny bit "bigger" in the low end to my ear, but I mean a TINY bit

That's the only shade of difference I can percieve

Seems to have been used alot, not sure where you came up with internet folklore.
