$9k for an 89 Soldano SLO 100?

Seems to have been used alot, not sure where you came up with internet folklore.


I think the ratio is way off in how much it was actually used vs how much it is revered by everyone on the internet. The amp was considered a high gain amplifier and while the design at the time was new I’ll give it that, as far high gain tones, I can think of very very VERY few it was used on. 80s hair stuff? Sure, alittle more I guess, but not much.

I remember for years there’d be Neil Schon used SLO’s (usually snakeskin) on EBay for just stupid money. The listing would just stay there for ever. Probably ended up being on Reverb eventually. I just miss when they were around 2K used but I could never swing the amount when I would see one. Certainly not my favorite amp but I wouldn’t say no to having one. It’s like the Ecstasy to me. I’d always prefer a Marshall and a pedal for my sound but they’re still fun amps to mess around with.

If they had documentation that EVH used it in the studio, I could see a SLO going for that kind of money but not just a wide release one. I wouldn’t consider it any more desirable than any other pre-BAD one.

Lukather and Landau used them on tons of sessions back in the day. Probably a year or two worth before moving on to the next trend. Clapton and Knopfler for a short time when they were in rotation. Warren Haynes still uses one. And like you said some of the 80’s rockers at least took pics with them.
And many amps came from that design supposedly, so somewhat iconic I think.
Not an amp I would probably like, never had the opportunity to play one, just a few Hotrods many years ago. Friend of mine bought one past year, not heard how he likes it.

SLO is definitely above the Hot Rod series. I could never get a sound out of those I liked that much. Made me wonder if Mike just got a little lucky with the SLO because the only other amp of their’s I played where I liked the dirty tone was an Atomic 16. FWIW, over the years I’ve tried or come across pretty much everything they’ve made apart from an X99 and the Reverb-o-sonic. This is of course is from the perspective of what I tend to like, which is the classic Marshall top end.

Yep. Add to that Gary Moore, EVH, Warren DeMartini, Lynch(what amp DIDN'T George use lol), Damon Johnson(Brother Cane)...probably more I forget. It's not a metal amp (unless you boost it; gets pretty tight) so it's not exactly a 'Rig Talk' type amp these days, RT is mostly metal posters so not that many here would dig it.

Definitely. I had an HR100 and while it was cool, when I got my first SLO it was no contest. Kinda like comparing an F Recto to a G; the F just has 'more' if that makes sense...more clarity, push, thump, just better tone all around.
I'd compare it also to the difference between a Mark 3 and a C+ but that would trigger VES. So I'll skip it.

Serious question to the Soldano experts; are those late 80's models REALLY that much better than the 90's and beyond? I've only played a '95 and mid 2000's model and they sounded the same to me based off my memory. A great amp that needs volume to shine but always been overpriced IMO for what you get.
I prayed that exact amp and preferred the 2011 slo I played- I’m not a big slo fan though

I found the difference of the SLO vs HR100 to be even bigger than those 2 Mesa examples. There used to be this studio in Queens that was also a dealer for Soldano where I was able to try at the time almost the entire Soldano line-up in the same studio room and none of the other models held up well vs the SLO

I forgot another friend / former student had the rackmount preamp. Don’t know if it was screwed up, but it sounded terrible, super bright sounding.

Well, do you need it to be super super modern METULZZZ tight or just 80s/90s hard rock/80s metal tight? I found it did a nice HR tone with just an eq pedal in front, frown mid boost, with the mids turned down on the SLO around 3 or so, through GBs or 65s. Reminded me somewhat of a modded Marshall. SD1, OD1X, GE10, any of those worked really well for me.
