Yes, the alnico is very thick and kind of dark sounding. The ceramic version is thick too, but not as much. I preferred the ceramic. It’s tighter, has more top end, and has an overall more pleasing voicing imo. However, it’s an “over-the-top 24/7” type of pickup.
I’d be hesitant about an...
I’ve had the Tremonti in one of my guitars for a few days now. It’s a Les Paul type of guitar but has a maple top, so not exactly like yours. I really dig it so far. It’s a big sounding pickup that has enough string separation to maintain a some clarity. It’s not Bare Knuckle alnico warpig level...
Yeah I definitely think of Brent when thinking of a silverburst Flying V, not Adam Jones.
Side note, back around ‘10 or so I had the opportunity to get a silverburst Flying V custom. I still regret not grabbing it to this day. Not one of my finer moments lol.
I wonder if Brent has a bad taste in his mouth after the Epiphone signature. He claims he didn’t get any money from that deal because of the Gibson bankruptcy.
I've never found unity to work either. When I first read about this technique years ago, I heard Fredman set the off-axis mic roughly 6-10db lower. That's the same range where I find it to work best for me as well.
Fast forward a few years, and I reached out on an advertisement post for his...
I dig the finish and the headstock doesn’t bug me. It’s different. That toggle placement is super dumb, though. The knobs also look pretty crowded as well.
That's how it functions. It's supposed to provide a constant 120v +/- 5v. It will shift to the tap that gets closest based on the incoming voltage. Oddly, that sometimes results in a slightly higher voltage. I've heard of others experiencing the same thing as well. I used to have the breakdown...
I need to break down and check out one of those brown boxes or a variac. I have a Furman Voltage regular, which has been helpful, but they’re flawed too. Depending on the incoming voltage and what tap the Furman utilizes, it can actually increase the voltage. Just yesterday it was reading 123...
I finally gave the MCP second degree blackbelt a go. It’s one I’ve always been curious about, and I have to say it’s a great sounding pickup. The WCR Godwood is another one I find myself curious about too.
For those that have been able to compare them, what’s the low down between them? Also...
What about a Dimzarzio Super Distortion? They sound killer in alder super strats. It may be pushing it on the output side, but it’s not extreme output either. It would definitely add some good mids and weight to the tone.
