Pickup for bigger sound?

I’ve never played the Timbre wolf, but looking at the space left on the bobbins it would have to be 44awg wire. 15k of 44awg is actually not as high output as you’d imaging and your not getting enough winds to fill the bobbin. Generally speaking, the fatter the bobbin the more low end you can get. I’m guessing no more than ~6500 or so winds. Winds determines output, not the resistance. To put thing is perspective all of my bridge pickups have more winds than that. My Sunset Strip uses bigger wire, 43awg and is 7000 winds coming in at 14.4K. My pickups would be hotter.

How do you like your top end and clarity?

The Suhr Aldrich will fatten up your tone. I feel the bottom end is emphasized and can be a bit loose for my liking, but also feel the tops ends is a compressed, but that works great for those juicy leads. If you like thick and compressed. It’s a good choice.

My Roxy will have a tighter more immediate lowend but is more open and breathes more in the upper mids and top end.

My wicked 8 is 14.4K with and ALNICO 8. Strength of a ceramic, tone of an ALNICO. It’s more of everything. Huge in anything while again have an open clarity and cleans up great

Man that Roxy IS more open than the aldrich. I want that one now too. How do we order now, through your site the best way?

I’ve had the Tremonti in one of my guitars for a few days now. It’s a Les Paul type of guitar but has a maple top, so not exactly like yours. I really dig it so far. It’s a big sounding pickup that has enough string separation to maintain a some clarity. It’s not Bare Knuckle alnico warpig level thickness, but it’s thick enough without sounding bloated. My experience with the Aldrich was underwhelming, but that was in a different guitars so I can’t compare directly. I know others dig it, though.
The Warpig is that huge and thick?

I have a suhr aldrich in my LP and I love it. I have a warpig in my Aviator strat and it's a great pickup but wouldn't be what I would recommend in this case.

However I went with Tonenerd wicked 8 in my Explorer(the one in scottosan's post from chubtone) it should be here tomorrow and the guys at chubtone said it was a great choice. It should be here tomorrow. His pickups are a steal and his customer service is top notch.

I'm already planning my next guitar to try the Roxy in.

Yes, the alnico is very thick and kind of dark sounding. The ceramic version is thick too, but not as much. I preferred the ceramic. It’s tighter, has more top end, and has an overall more pleasing voicing imo. However, it’s an “over-the-top 24/7” type of pickup.

I’d be hesitant about an alnico warpig in an all mahogany guitar. When I tried it in an all mahogany PRS MIra I had at the time, it was too mid dense & bloated and overly dark. The ceramic faired much better for me, but it would really depend on what you want out of the guitar and what kind of tones you’re going for because it would likely paint you into a corner.

I just recently picked up the below "Fair Warning" model pickup . You can hear samples of it then Jim explains what's different about it compared to other pickup's .

HERE IS UNCHAINED USING THE "FW" PICKUP .

Do a JB with 125K total load. Wire a 333K resistor from the hot output of the pickup straight to ground, which will keep the bridge and middle position at 125K, and the neck at 250K where it wants to be.

Do it. Find out!

It's so subjective and dependent on your goals and what you think sounds and feels good..
Since a Les Paul is all Mahogany, maybe find out what sounds good in those. (y)
All Mahogany with a Maple cap in most cases.

I can vouch for the Wicked 8, finally got it in my Chubtone and it's a big sounding pickup and keeps some of that sweetness of the Duncan JB.

I've always been a fan of the JB in shred style guitars but over the years my ears have changed to my Pauls and PRS's Tremonti's. Both loaded with Ceramics and just have a bigger character.

Curt did a great job with the wood on my Chubtone, nice big chunk of Mahogany but the Duncan was a little small sounding in this guitar compared to the Pauls and Tremonti's. The Wicked 8 is giving me that kerrang of the 500T/Tremonti pup while adding the sweetness and harmonics of the Alnico...so far I'm really digging this thing. Well done @scottosan.

Thanks guys..
I may try a ceramic mag pickup or A8.
I am also thinking of selling this McCarty since I have a thing for singlecut guitars and I could easily just play singlecuts.

Could always try the SD Alt8. they can be found fairly cheap from time to time.

Is that supposed to knock off some of the treble and compression?

It specifically reduces the amplitude of the resonant peak frequency. JB’s are designed for two 250k pots but get installed in guitars with two 500k’s all the time.
