Change the tube, yes. They can do all kinds of weird things when they're going. Volume jumping or cutting in and out is pretty common for a bad power tube. And not using the loop is even more cause to clean jacks. Not using it lets dust/dirt collect.

Honestly, I think they were boosting JCM 800's with Metal Zones. That was the Florida death metal crazy back then.

I've had one, I had no issues, but it was the 100H, before HR. I know they're voiced somewhat different, and an added Master, but both Vietnamese. I still love the old-school UK versions. I think they scooped out some mids and revoiced the red channel on the HR.
