Those are my observations as well. Now, Lynch is a fit guy but he's not a bodybuilder like JP or Wylde. I also used to go to gym regularly and it took days after heavy lifts before I was back to normal ...
I vaguely recall he got big enough, fast enough to where people were calling him out for taking roids. Maybe 20 years ago or so? I don’t know if he took them but he got started working out after recuperating from a bicycle accident or something.

Hence my asking, what do you think? And even if that is it, what do you think is the reason for the change in his playing? he used to have these intricate, almost fusiony, jazzy lines. He could also play turbofast with 100% accuracy. For a while now, and around since his body change, it is just not like that anymore.

I think some of it is hair age personally…. I mean who knows in reality, but I guess what I’m saying is, what player actually gets better with age? I mean of course to a certain extent sure. But Up to what point? I would also be careful to say that they “can’t” play like that anymore so much as maybe his style and tastes have just changed. Again, I have nothing to really back that up either, i just believe there could be a multitude of reasons why you notice this.

i saw micheal angelo batio at an instore once. he was telling stories about living in la in the 80s, and how him and jim gellette would work out a lot, and at a certain point, he had to decide what was more important, being ripped, or playing fast because he was noticing that body building was fucking with his playing. fwiw.

He told that same story at a D.O.A. party.
M.A.B. is one of the nicest and most helpful guys I have ever met. He came to every Dean guitars party I ever attended.

As for the subject matter at hand(fucking shitty pun), I have never seen a sausage fingered concert level violinist or a ham handed fine watch maker. I know the gorilla mitts I wield now are not nearly as nimble as the long and elegant fingers of my youth.
I would also note that my technique is far closer to Kevin Frasard's in the the video shown than that of both M.A.B. and Petrucci, who both practice the conservation of movement techniques...tho I like Kevin's material far better.

JP can definitely still fucking shred. I think the bigger possibility is that you just don't like his newer music as much as the old stuff

I lost interest in DT after 2002. In recent years does JP nail his earlier solos live? Haven’t heard live material from them in many years.

if his arms are burned out because he recently worked out, i can see that affecting his playing. Or is it a size/bodyweight thing? If so, Yngwie's playing should be all over the place over the years

On point.

But seriously i think absolutely muscle can affect guitar playing...tension in forearms, size of arms and body in general in relation to where your guitar sits. Ultimately though, i think if you learn to play skinny and then bulk up, that is where you see the effect more. If you were always jacked and learned guitar that way, you learn in that body and there is prob not much difference. Now feed my Frankenstein... it's feeding time!!!!

Zakk wylde has never had a problem his whole life.
He was DEF nowhere near the size he is now when he was younger. Stood right beside him several xs back in the early 80s.

He was Bon Jovi skinny back then..

He’s been mostly the same size for a while though which isn’t too difficult to maintain. Growing is where playing suffers as your always lethargic, with sausage fingers, and get a pump from walking. Probably more to do with age or complacency than lifting.
A%You're a man who has moved some weight and did some drugs to move more.
Ask me how I know?

Bigger muscles + the beard. Exact same thing happened to Zakk Wylde. The skinnier Zakk with no beard was better as well. We figured it out. I’m going to shave. I’ll be right back
