34s hands down FTW.

And that's a big .

(I've got GL-KT77s in mine now and it's almost rude how damn good it sounds).

Happy for you thought, Bro!! The 20th is in a league of its own.

IDK bro..... :D

Probably the 34's would be better on the Green channel. I wouldn't live there much anyway. Blue, I can't tell much difference (best I can remember). Blue is the honey hole on this amp though. A single channel of that would be a hell of an amp on its own. But, I am thinking 6L6's on the Red channel sound great. Probably lacks a bit of bottom end as compared to the 34's. But, best I remember, the 6L6's make the amp more open, less dark and much less compressed on the Red channel.

Back to you
Bottom end is for the Bass player

Not so, my young grasshopper!! Many, many moons ago, band members gave up on bass players learning to play their parts correctly with mighty thunder and attitude. Confucius say, "We mus have thunder!" So he give honorable duty to guitar playa. Thunder has been reborn!!

Somewhere there's a room used as a support group meeting area for bassists in recovery or denial.

They're reading this.

Just look for the building with the suicide safety nets outside the windows.

Oops .... I removed them.... Thought it was fishing nets hanging out to dry

Right next to the meeting group for drummers who actually believe they have something to say...

:hys:

My bad, I'm actually a drummer before a guitarist, but I couldn't resist.

I tried both and definitely preferred the 6L6. I preferred the metal tone, and as Steve says the blue channel was similar to the EL34. Nicer clean channel too.

Well, here's my thoughts. I thought after the change from EL34's to KT77's that the amp was more open and balanced with more of a Fender-like clean, so I'd lean towards buying a 6L6 model if I were to do it all over again. 34's just seem to compress the tone a lot.

For comparison sake: While I liked the 101b blue channel, I have to admit I wasn't getting the same cut, probably due to compression of the low mids/bass. It sounded cool on it's own, but got eaten up in a band mix more, especially with mid-heavy amps. For me, it comes down to how well it sits in the mix more than anything...KT77's and 6L6's are where it's at with an XTC IMO - more dynamic, more note definition and a fuller spectrum of frequencies.

BTW, here's a pretty damn good comparison of 20th Ecstasy w/ 34 vs 6L6:

One of the few comparison demos where I can almost "feel" the difference. He did a good job showing the dynamics and response IMO.

Thanks for your comments about my vids ;)
I ll make a comparaison with a vh4 and the bogner model in the axe fx 2!

I really prefer 6l6 in the 20th xtc !
I have sold the el34 model.
6l6 is more versatile and i prefer the red Channel on this one !
Clean is really better too ..
Blue Channel is less modern in the el34 though

The same for me guys.
I also tried both and definitely preferred the 6L6 ( not only the clean channel but also the red and blue )

Nope, had both, EL34 for the win. Sold the 6L6. Nice amp but no comparo to the EL34 for me. Classic tones all day, just this right mid range thwack and grind. Too many just classic tones in the EL34 IMO. Why do you think they sold so many 101B and so few 101A's if the 6L6's were better. Kept my 101B too, sold off the 6L6 20th. Tried KT77's and didnt dig em either. I'm picky though, only certain EL34's do it for me. Sounds killer at low volumes too but just gets thicker and grindier as you turn it up.

Your wright with the "old "type 101b and 101a's, but didn't that change a bit with the new 20th edition ?
I thought that Bogner sold just about 80% 6l6 versions of the standard 20th anniversary amp versus 20% el34's
I guess the one is not "better" than the other and they are both great.
Its just what you like in a sound, I tried the el34 and yes, the sound is a bit more heavy/fat/beefy compared to the 6l6.
But for me the "standard "6l6 did the trick ( I also own a shiva el34 for that extra mids if I need it )
