Was goofing around with an SG, Timmy and 2204

It's probably my fav pedal for boosting a Marshall. And a bunch of other stuff. It's like a Swiss Army Knife overdrive.
I've been playing superstrats a lot lately. Feels good to fondle a Gibson!

I just picked up the little MXR Timmy and I really like it. You can really tweak it to get everything from totally transparent boosting, to boost with just a little low end tightening and harmonics, to various flavors of OD. It really is a worthwhile addition if you aren’t always looking for the tubescreamer thing.

It is by far the most useful od pedal I've had.

Man that tone is razor sharp on the staccato galloping. I love that clean undertone on the palm mutes. Killer sounding amp and tone

I have the MXR version as well, sounds great.

Although I’ve realized I need to upgrade to a full size version, those little knobs are a pain in the ass lol.

So at 2:00 you are not pushing the amp with anything? What are your amp settings. Your 2204 sounds like it has more gain than my Ceriatone 2204.

Thanks. The Timmy takes that loose, unruly sound, tightens it up, and kicks the gain up a notch without any mud. Razor sharp, but still sings n stings on solos.
Surprisingly, the Wampler Belle gets pretty close, with it's bass knob turned way down. Based on the Nobels ODR, really good all around od pedal.

Sounds terrific! I've never gotten that kind of gain/attack/sharpness/grind out of the late 70s JMP 2204s I owned...not even close. Maybe I need to try an 800.

IME that’s how these amps typically sound with a boost (like this clip). My ‘79 JMP2203 with a boost is that kinda sound too. The 800’s tend to sound tighter, more attack-y and bright, while jmp2203’s tend to have more growl and warmth, I like the JMP’s a bit more, but similar overall. Maybe an 800 could work a little better for you or maybe the 2204 being 50 watts was part of it, hard to say. I love these amps though, especially boosted

I've had JMP 2204s and 2203s, that were a bit warmer sounding. The plate voltage was lower on the 2204, and the bright cap was a lower value. Sounded insanely good with the MV above noon.
The JCM (I think) has higher plate voltage, bit tighter and brighter.
A fawn 79 JMP 2204 with 6550s sounded like this one. Should have kept it.

Agreed. I think it is the sound to measure other high gain sounds by. I'm not saying it's the best. But some of the best rock and metal albums have been made with these amps.
Agreed. That’s what I do. Always good to have a reference point like that. I’ve had at this point tried pretty all the high gain amps out there besides a Larry (pretty much have tried all the great amps except that and a real Trainwreck) and to me a good stock boosted 2203/4 is somewhere in my top 10 favorites

I just ran a Jan Ray thru the Marshall.
It's basically a modded Timmy, tighter lows, lower mids, gainier with slight bit more compression. @scottosan Roxy pup thru that pedal into the Marshall is golden. Perfection.

If I wouldn't have just started down the audiophile rabbit hole, I'd consider picking up an older JCM 2203. Just bought new stereo speakers and got my sites on an integrated tube amp and tube DAC. Phucking hobbies cost a fortune.

Oh, my bro, you are truly fuqd.
Welcome to the rabbit hole world of wasted time, pointless scrutinization, judgemental prix and $ flying into a downward spiral leading to hell.
Swapping NOS preamp tubes is a drop in the ocean compared to the ginormous mindfuk that is AUDIOPHILE.

Oh, and good luck finding an unmolested JMP/JCM, especially for a reasonable price. Shit turned gold overnight.

Is what ya make of it I think...you can go as deep as you let yourself. I'm hoping my vast experience gassing/flipping in the guitar gear world will serve me well in terms of keeping things focused towards goals with the stereo setup. I know what I'm looking for and I know entry level shit will only lead me to wanting to try the next level. I'm starting out with some pretty good mid level stuff and already know the limitations the law of diminishing returns imparts on the experience and I know that taking it to the stupid expensive level just won't offer enough return vs cost. Tube swaps, especially NOS, don't interest me at all...been there with guitar amps countless times to no great benefit.

Shockingly, they are out there :)

I am now looking for the perfect boost for my new '83 JCM 800 2003.
