2x12 for High-Gain

CAA 2x12...nothing better, and I've tried most of the popular choices

I'd agree on the condition that you load them with V30s. For some reason, nothing else sounds exactly right in that cab. It's super compact and lightweight though, so my back loved the crap out of it.

Just had a "New Cab Day" today. Picked up an empty Orange (black) PPC212 and loaded it with a pair of Celestion Century Vintage speakers(the super light neo magnet ones). Had my friend bring his DSL and Splawn cab over and we tried a bunch of combos and A/B'd the 2x12's. His Splawn cab loaded with a SB and BB just sounds fantastic. Orange cab sounds just as good. Different obviously because of the speakers, but really good. I'd be equally happy with either. I would like to try one of the EVH 2x12's with my amp too.

How do you like those Century speakers? A lot different from, say, V30's?

I'm sure others are better, but my Avatar traditional has been a real workhorse for me over the last 4 or 5 years.

I think my Engl E212VH cabs sound great (as part of an Engl half stack with E530 + E850 100); I have 2.

Love my Creamback loaded Splawn 2x12's even for metal.

Yup. The Splawn 2x12s are killer.

Are you talking about the OS Splawn?
I was told they wont make tha one anymore.

Old Splawn OS 2x12 = Mojotone Bluesbreaker 2x12 = Bogner OS 2x12 without Dacron batting = Avatar Vintage 2x12

Yeah, that's what I suspected. But the only available Splawn 2x12 is like the one pictured above right? Seems like a decent cab. I already have a Mesa 2x12. I wonder how different it really is... Although the Mesa is the smallest cab overall. Largest is the Diezel. Might as well get a 4x12 if one goes that big. Bogner is only 5" shorter than their standard 4x12 (which I already have).

Splawn: 20h x 29.5w x 14d
VOLUME: 8260"

Mesa: 17.5h x 30.125w x 14.25d
VOLUME: 7512"

Bogner OS: 25.75h x 29.75w x 11.9d (only 5 inches shorter than a 4x12)
VOLUME: 9116"

Diezel Rearloaded OS: 24.5h x 29.14w x 14d
VOLUME: 9995"

Port City OS: 24.75h x 30w x 11.875d
VOLUME: 8817"

Then there's this Bogner 211CB. Slightly smaller. Built more like a smaller version of their 4x12. This clip sounds pretty good. Size is 17.5h x 30w x 13.75d, VOLUME: 7218.

I really like the Century Vintage speakers. V30's are my favorite speakers to use with my amps. Splawn Small Blocks and Celestions G12K-85's sound awesome too, but If I had to pick just one it would be V30's. The Century Vintages I have sound similar to the V30's but not the same. A little darker and maybe a tad smoother. The dense/tight weave on the Orange cab makes them even a little "duller". Not a problem, I just turn the treble on my amp up from 5 to 6 and the Presence from 3 to 4 and that makes up for it. They sound pretty damn cool in the 2x12 with some volume behind it.

OP, The Splawn 2x12 and my Orange 2x12 cabs are just big. Your right, not much smaller than a 4x12. A little more portability. The EVH 2x12 I played in the store sounded really good and it's smaller. OR at least shorter. Kind of like it but honestly I can't stand the tolex they use for some reason. Gotta take that big ass ugly EVH logo off too.  I'd like to try on the the DV Mark 2x12 cabs. 23Pounds!!!!!

I built a cab very similar to the Bogner 212CB and I love it. I think mine is 29wX14dX17h. I front loaded mine with emi gb12's. It has a surprising wide dispersion of sound, not as beaming as you might think. I've also heard nothing but good things about Peterson cabs. You can see his work over at the tgp.

Port city sounded killer with Einstein but my forte s/v cabinet killed all my other cabs dead so they went.

Thanks for the list :)

The Forte look interesting. For something like that that, though, I'd have to try it before pulling the trigger. The other cabs at least have a larger history/user group to gain perspective from.

Does the Forte SV have to be run vertically or can you lay it down?
I have a Dr Z Z Best 2x12 that can be run both ways.

I always had really good luck with my VHT Fatbottom 2x12. Killer tight aggressive tones. I took out the PE50's and loaded it with G12H's, never looked back.

Looks very similar to the Bogner OS. Almost the same dimensions. But it's front loaded. Which I think I don't want. But looks like a quality cab.

I can understand that point of view.

Personally I only rely on scientific testing, i run with an acoustitician buddy who compels me to use science instead of solely relying on subjectivity. (Ears)

Research column effect and you ll see why I choose vertical 2/12s. Aesthetics was not an issue for me, I use an axefx2 rack that doesn't sit on the cab and even when I had tube heads I sat them on the floor to isolate the microphonics so it was never a consideration.

As for the cabinet, well it's the best of both worlds, a sealed AND a ported cabinet at once. I found ported cabinets left me desiring tight bottom end punch so I added a sealed cab back in with my port city,. I loved it so much started looking again when I made that list, tried them all.

The forte is the clear winner for me. So much so I've had four forte cabinets, settling on two s/v 2x12s. Sold a port city 2x12os, diezel USA 2x12, forte 3d2x12, and a mesa 4x12 and haven't looked back since.

Alone it's as big sounding as a 4x12 both together crush any 4/12 I've ever heard, should though , much bigger total volume than a single 4x12.

I'm even using one for a bass rig!

Nope it's meant to be run vertical.

If you lay it down one port would be on the floor and the other at the ceiling.
