Cannibal corpse, who has maybe the best live tone I’ve ever heard disagrees with you.
I’m seeing them next month opening for Meshuggah. Will see

I don’t care anyway what guys use, but I’ve heard George Lynch preferred the orange ch and I’d imagine he’s not the only one

While the Orange channel may be a smidge more tonefull by itself, the Red ch. cuts through a live band 10x better. Sam will never understand that.
Not by a smidge, by a ton. It’s a very different sound. And I do understand why red would cut more, thank you. We can do lots of comparisons of examples of cheaper amps with worse tone that would cut much better than another more expensive, toneful amp, but I think it’s about a balance of both. There’s a lot of high gain tones I’ve heard live that cut well, but sound terrible. I could use anyway amps with better cut and tone than the recto red ch, but I can’t find a good alternative for the sound the orange ch does

The Lenz Octane I just sold I’d bet money would cut way better than any recto I’ve tried besides the Badlander, but ultimately still liked the tone itself better on my recto’s I kept. I remember at one band practice many years ago now I had a tremoverb and the other guitarist had a jcm800. He buried me about the same whether I was on the red or orange ch. Going with the red was like maybe putting out your hand while you’re still gonna get run over by the train either way

I know also you meant just live, but in a recording context the orange ch of this triple Rev F/C modded I had for my friend’s music it sat beautifully in the mix for his reamps. I showed him the red ch and he hated it like me. He chose it over the other amps I had a few years ago. He had almost every high gain flavor to choose from and he went with the recto orange ch. I didn’t necessarily I agree with him for all of it, but it’s his music

I prefer the orange channel as well, but I honestly really don't get along with rectos.

I've been wildly trying to get decent recorded tones out of a couple of rectos i've profiled multiple times, and the orange channel with a boost is the closest I can get to a usable sound personally.

I can see the appeal of the red channel in the same way I see the appeal of the insane setting on a line 6

This I agree with 110%. I love Recto’s, but they’re generally a terrible fit imo for most of your kind of stuff. I think maybe they can be nice for some spots where you have just some long held chords for something different. One of your recent recto clips sounded quite good to me though. With the Klon boosting it it can be very good, but still would take a lot of work to really make it work great

It definitely does take a lot of work, especially in post. There always has to be multiband compression, careful hi and lo pass, extra EQ, and a million takes because the low end smears on palm muted peaks. It does have a very specific sound that's classic and recognizable, though. I think cannibal corpse has awful tone so i'm not a good judge on that score, but I know amon amarth used rectos on their early stuff and I love some of those tones.

Yeah for me Recto’s are never gonna be better than 7.5/10 for those palm mutes no matter what I do. I mainly like it when I’m doing riffs that are mostly simple powerchords in the lower register. For that I feel it’s very tough to rival and one of my all time favorites there, but for busier, faster or heavily palm muted stuff I wouldn’t pick it. I kind of agree with Cannibal Corpse, but will see next month how them and Meshuggah are live. I really like some Amon Amarth stuff

That totally makes sense about lower register powerchords, they do have a growl that is super recognizable.

I'm not a meshuggah or CC fan but i hope the show is fun!

Yes the throaty furry growl is what it’s about and that’s what the red ch just doesn’t have in the cards. There are moments here and there where you have riffs like that that I think could be cool with the recto orange ch

Meshuggah is one of my all time favorite metal bands, so I’m really just looking forward to that part, but will see about CC and Carcass opening for them

Don’t get me wrong I love the orange channel too. Probably why it’s my favorite amp I own, because both channels rule. But man, cannibal corpse, Rammstein, meshuggah etc using the red channel it’s hard to deny that tone is anything but legendary.

Sidebar… I was watching this, this morning. Rutans playing is absolutely insane to watch

Oh man, I can’t stand Rutan. Turned CC into sludgy Morbid Angel lite and butchers Pat’s solos live.

As many times as I try to use the Orange channel, I can never get a long with it. I think it is too smooth and has too many lower mids. It starts sounding too much like Foo Fighters or something.

Cannibal Corpse, Rammstein, Meshuggah, Nevermore, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Testament, etc.... pretty much every heavy band I associate with the Recto sound is always the Red channel.

The lower mids is where all its throaty growl, aggression and richness in tone lies. It is a looser sound though, but richer. Iirc Foo Fighters had that growl, while the red ch is baby smooth in that region

I also generally like EL34’s in mine to bring out more throaty growl and cut. It makes the amp a bit tighter and faster, but it’s still a recto

I like both orange and red moderns on all the various era rectifiers. For me it just depends on which guitar/pickups/boosts I'm using at the moment.
On my MW Triple they can be tweaked to sound almost identical, although there is still a slight difference in tone and feel.
Unfortunately for me I have never had an early revision 2-channel.

Imo they really dropped the ball with the orange mode on the MW and 3 ch version Recto’s. On those I’d generally actually prefer the red ch. on the 2 ch Recto’s they’re very different and don’t like the red ch half as much

You like the orange on the 2chs better than the 3chs
and prefer the red on the 3chs to the red on the 2chs?

Or is the orange on the 3chs so bad, that even the red on the 3chs sound better to you?

i remember liking both, but never could make up my mind. actually the orange cloned to modern sounded better than the red modern if i remember correctly, but then you had no true orange channel:(

I definitely prefer orange on the 2 channel versions. I would just say I don't care in general for the 3ch recto's and if I had to pick would probably lean just a little to the red ch, but it's one of those things that maybe could change each week lol, but I don't need think this much about an amp I wouldn't get for my needs

Might be a mistake but I’m at a gig and had my wife bring it in the middle of our set after being delivered this evening. Hope this goes well

So how did it go?

PS: I love the red channel on my G to C modded Dual, silicone rectified, fx loop modded master at 10 oclock, channel volume at 11 oclock, NO BOOST needed. Total orgasmic three dimensional liquid sex in amp.
