Alternative to TS types for a boost: OCD?

Amp ho
Techdeath talked me into buying an OCD when the Fulltone news broke out the other week. Been a LONG time since I’ve played one and I gotta say, it rips as a boost. I’m surprised and it’s nice to have something different from the 30 TS types I have in a drawer.

I get bored of most stuff quickly so time will tell, but aside from a TS type, my favorites are the Koko boost and OCD.

I should do a clip comparing them all. Maybe if I get some time this week. Thinking Buxom Boost, Koko, 805, OCD, Green Rhino, SD1. Have a Tim but I don’t like that as much as a boost - feel like it works better as a mild OD to give you a couple notches more gain with the same general tone you already have. Missing anything obvious that should be in there?

Sounds good! I’ve been wanting to get an early version OCD myself to try. For boosts missing the most obvious would be a Klon type, also a germanium boost like a range master type (the Coppersound Broadway is the best current one I’ve tried) and then I’d say a good vintage rack PQ also can be great with its own flavor/feel from pedals

This video sounds great . It definitely adds character. I still got to get off my ass and do it with my 2203 . Btw it was nice to get them cheaper before the crazy prices now lol

I have a ehx glove od that is supposed to be like an ocd

For whatever reason, I can’t get on with a klone as a boost for high gain stuff. Really liked the Decibelics to add some poke and definition to a low/mid gain sound.

I do have a Naga Viper - I’ll throw that in. Good thought thanks Sam

I would try a decent Dallas Rangemaster clone .....

Saw your vid last night and it sounds awesome.
Went to look up an OCD and said, yeah I got enough now.
For my 800, the Jam Ray. https://reverb.com/item/114305-dcw-pedals-jam-ray

I have a TS, Buxom, SD-1, Cal Martin Plex and a bunch in my HXFX. Jam Ray is def my fave, but that OCD sounds mean!
Thanks man. Always thought the Jan Ray was a tweaked Timmy voiced for fenders (Timmy is voiced for marshall amps). Might throw in the Tim just to have it though for reference

now I’m thinking of the od’s I have that I haven’t played in a while, maybe I’ll grab some later and make a clip

The NAGA VIPER will give you that 80's DIO era Tony Iommi tone into your JCM800. I don't personally have one but I know guys that do and it's a killer if you like the type of tone. I think it might fit your style as well to give you a different flavor of boost.

I think the NAGA has some mods and tricks built into but I think it can do stock setting as well.

The Seymour Duncan 805 is great pedal it can be dialed as a mid boost or very neutral like an EQ pedal but it's still an offshoot of a 808/SD-1 to my knowledge.

SD1 80s or Waza version. Different clipping than what you have. I like the OD1X better; tightens without losing any lows; and you won’t find a quieter pedal. But the SD/OD have the same clipping so either one would give a different flavor.
I have a Joyo Ultimate Drive which is an OCD clone; I bought it way back in 08 and eventually tried the real thing; OCD V1. Sold the OCD lol

Klon is a must, reckon you’d like the J Rockett Archer if you haven’t tried that one. Killer with Marshalls.

BB Preamp is cool, quite tubescreamer based though. I have a mustard fx rangemaster, cool having the vintage parts but I’d probably recommend Naga Viper for that thing.

Some of the Mesa pedals are excellent too, kind of their own takes of existing circuits but they’re all pretty good.

Maybe you’d like Bogner Wessex too?

Actually have an OD1x and SD1 waza

Fuck this clip is going to be a pain in the dick

Had my V2 OCD since 06. Many, many dirtboxes have come and gone, but it stayed. In fact, it’s the only pedal I own. I have it looped into my Helix, which I pretty much only use as a pedaboard for my amps.

Naga Viper not true enough to original?
I don't think the Naga has a real deal Germanium transistor .... I believe it uses a 2N222A transistor ... it's silicon .
You want to try something that has a old Germanium transistor in it ....
I'm not trying to " Spam " anyone with my builds .... but I build them with old school Germanium transistors and old school Mullard Tropical Fish caps ( I source almost all my vintage parts from Smallbear so I know they are legit ) also has three different input cap values that are selectable ... takes it from stock rangemaster to what I call " Iommi mode "

I think the OCD is a pretty underrated boost for high gain. Some complain it's not as tight as a TS but plenty of amps don't need that much low cut - Marshall derivatives especially. The OCD's lack of mid-hump and switchable high shelf make it really useful in lots of situations where a TS sounds honky or lacking teeth.

Very well said. Agree with all of that. It’s almost refreshing to hear it after using TS types so much lately

Heck, for good measure, why not throw in an EQ pedal as well. :)
