Out here in the Finger lakes, we have fucktards from the city with too much money paying cash for houses sight unseen.
Usually at least $30k over asking price.
I know two couples dealing with this now.
You can't compete with people like this legally...

A large percent of the country is invested in those companies via their retirement packages completely unbeknownst to them.
YUP...............essentially they are using everyone's retirement funds to destroy the USA and the pensioners to artificially drive market forces and then they become the LANDLORDS when no one can afford a home, pretty much what the WEF told everyone in 2020. Gotta give them credit on implementation and execution Americans will just not let themselves believe the malevolent evil that is openly being foist upon them as it is being implemented in real time all around them....

It's not just trendy areas that are being gamed. It's everywhere.
Yeah, the rent doesn’t just go up on one house in the area. It’s like a stink that permeates the whole community. Then take it country-wide.

Pretty much this. The problem is builders make more money building larger homes. I look on trulia and everything is 3 beds 2 baths or more and 2500+ sq ft as a result. I'm looking for 2 beds, 2 baths, 1200-1500 sq ft absolute max. Most homes that size are either self built, custom built, or are older than 1960 and in need of repair, renovation, or demolition. The rest are trailer houses which are fine but require more maintenance and the cheap ass parts are a complete ripoff that you can't get at lowes without a full retrofit.

I built my place on a slab 720sq ft ground level with about 300 sq ft loft and I still think my electric bill it too high in the summer just using a big window unit and running a couple fans. I put a woodstove in because I got wood to cut and that means cheap, reliable heat. Live cheap=play more guitar.
It may seem odd but even the Amish community here is following that trend. A neighbor got a permit to build “a small house for his mother” on his property. Now it looks like about 2,000 sq ft per level, 2 stories with a full basement (can’t be seen from the road) and looks more like an apartment complex than a home.
And yeah, I couldn’t do a damn thing about it.

if you own land, you can charge what you want for it; even if it may seem morally wrong, it's legal. just like our ruling parasites getting wealthy in office.

for example, AOC was a bartended; when she got into the House she made a salary of around $150K; today, a few years later, her net worth is around $29M. must be magic, or corruption. Now imagine the wealth of members of Congress in office for many years or many decades.

The problem is that “legal” is designed for the benefit of certain groups at the expense of others. I’m not saying that someone shouldn’t be able to charge what they want, but the reasons these businesses are in a position to exploit people is because of the regulatory system.

I don't see it as exploitation. You have your house on someone else's land. What did you think could happen?

If I park my car overnight in a neighborhood known for crime, I don't expect nothing will happen.

Most people who own land want to make a profit from that land, or at least break even...I'm sure there are property taxes, insurance, who knows what else, costs to the landowner.

One of the things stopping me from getting the sailboat I want (a sailing catamaran) is the marina cost for a slip which can cost well over $1K per month for even a small catamaran because of its' beam (width), even with a 12-month lease to offset costs, even if my boat isn't there; shorter terms are even more expensive. I expect that cost to continue to rise. A mooring is less expensive, but tough to find, none are available close by...

we all need to be informed consumers, and understand the total cost of ownership, and understand what can happen.

I get what you’re saying and I agree in principle. But the regulatory environment makes it so that these people don’t have other options that cost less. That makes it so they can be squeezed. Unfortunately we don’t have a free market and if we did they would have a less costly option that satisfied their basic needs.

If you got a million bucks it shouldn't be a problem. Actually it can be done for cheaper. I'd look for waterfront in Hudson FL. Deep water frontage that can fit 30-50 foot for approx 500k. You could rent out the house if you needed some income coming back in. I've looked at buying a slip but you might as well get the house too for the cost and rule bs. Some of the condos in central FL include the slip but then you're on the hook for association fees and maintenance read: $$$. Might be able to timeshare it though.

I can afford the house, but not the boat once I have the house. Plus FL right now is an insurance nightmare. $500 mo on the low end to park a 30 footer is to steep for me unless I can liveaboard and you still need a small shop to make working on stuff easier i.e garage. Just throwing some ideas out there. Depending on where you look and what you're willing to deal with there can be affordable waterfront....

You should consider launching a GoFundMe over on TGP.
