After several tests and shootouts we made the decision
to go with the EL34-SED (Winged C) for the next time and
I hope for the next years.
It´s one of the most reliable tubes on the market and sounds
rich with a lot of harmonics.

We start to provide the VH4 tomorrow and the Einstein and
Herbert during the next two months.

Best regards,

Peter

Hehe, I put a set of these in the Einstein a couple of weeks ago but haven't had the chance to test them yet.

Looking forwards to hearing it if they're the new standard! :D

I'm an Egnater guy myself, though I do have tremendous respect for Diezel amps. I just want to say that I think that this is a great move. The =C= EL34s are, to me, some of the nicest sounding tubes in the world. I've gotten everything from modern sounds to vintage Marshall brown sounds to really thrashy metal sounds, and they all sound great with these tubes.

Kudos!

Thanks Myke. I have a very good relationship to Bruce
@ Itsme: I prefer 35 milliamps each tube.

Damn skippy, love to hear this, I was going to try them out anyway since I'm due for a re-tube so it's good to hear they sound good, I thought they probably would.

Hey Peter... have you tried the SED 6L6 ??? I've heard that they are amazing with the Herbert ???

Would love to know your personal thoughts about these...

Thanks! I was just about to ask how the EL34 trials ended up. Peter, comparing subjectively, how do the SED EL34s compare in the VH4 to the Ruby 6L6s? I think you used that tube in the past and I know its sound, so I'm curious to hear what the difference is from your point of view.

Benkenove, I can't speak for the Herbert but I've run the SED 6L6 in a VH4 in the past. To me it was a very bassy and very warm tube. It gave a full sound, but there wasn't enough definition in the high gain channels for my taste. Maybe the Herbert has more treble to work with, but in the VH4 it just didn't work for me.

The 6L6-SED was in the top five with some advantage on the clean
but cannot beat the EL34-SED in the distortion department.

I had =C= EL34s in my Marshall DSL100, and I really liked them... reliable, and nice tone. I bet they would be great in my VH4.

Thanks for your answer Peter...

Now another question... do you think it would be a good idea to put a pair of SED 6l6 in the pair that "controls" the clean channel... and in the other 2 pairs put the EL34, to get the best distorsion ???

Do you think it would be a good combo ?? if so, where would be the best way to put the 2 6L6...? (which are the tubes that works for the channel 1 ?

Thanks ;)

The power section works for all channels in the same way, Ben.

How are they different tonewise to the old EL-34? Or was it mostly a reliability thing...

Now I´m used to the tubes and don´t want to miss them.
Smoother sound, faster attack and more definition.

I tried out a =C= Svetlana retube last night:

Carvin DC-127 (Maple neck-thru, maple cap, poplar wings) with Carvin's higher outpup p/ups
-> NS-2 -> TS-9 (Analogman 808 mod) -> TU-2
-> Einstein with =C= EL34s -> Framus cab w/v30s

The tubes make a massive difference. Seriously.... **** me....

NOTES: 1) The guitar is fairly bright and responsive, the pickups are quite nice, reasnable output and not as tight as BKPs 2) I didn't use the TS-9 much, when I do it's to roll ack the bass and add a bit of gain & top end harmonics.

Clean sounded very nice, esp with neck p/up tapped it was very 3D. Mode 3 (mega) is now un****ingbelievable. Very fast response and I can use more gain then I could before I retubed and still have clarity. Both death metal and stoner type riffs sound equally good - a first as I've not been able to do this on the same channel with the same settings before!! I use the lead channel for more saturation rather then for lead playing as such, this is also tighter without losing it's depth. Feedback is fully controllable, mmmm...

Very, very impressive, and I was impressed by the amp already. I'll be using these power tubes from now on, no question AT ALL. My Einstien loves them.

  :D

EDIT: FWIW last week I was using my Mesa Dual Recto as I was too lazy to take the Einie to the studio. That was a mistake. This amp blows the Recto out of the water *completely* now. Unreal. The Recto previously had the edge on low end and aggressiveness, but that's not so much the case now as the SEDs give you a lot more to play with!

i always liked EL34-SED (Winged C) better than any other EL34 i have ever used, i wished more companys were using them in new amps but i guess they are harder to get, im glad to see that peter liked them enough to use them in the future.

Maybe I´m just stupid or suffering from temporary blackout, but is the EL34-SED named differently around the globe? I´m currently using Ruby 6L6´s and wanna test these tubes because I´m missing the midrange to make the amp "come out of the box", and if Peter say EL34-SED is the shit, then they are!! My problem is that I can´t find the tubes here in Sweden! Help please.... ;)

They're sometimes called winged c's because of the =c= on the bottle, but that's it.
