Here's an update. I bought a set of SED "Winged C" EL34s and put them in my VH4. Peter, you are a tonal genius! These sound fantastic! I'm getting tons of definition and crunchiness, the likes of which I haven't heard before. Distortion is smooth but growling all at the same time. What I'm really impressed with is how responsive the lower frequencies are. They ring out heavily but stop on a dime when I mute the guitar as well. Beautiful!
I will say though, if I was a Herbert owner I'd try mixing 2 pairs of SED EL34's with 1 pair of TAD 6l6GCSTR's. Someone try it and tell me how it sounds.
