Here's an update. I bought a set of SED "Winged C" EL34s and put them in my VH4. Peter, you are a tonal genius! These sound fantastic! I'm getting tons of definition and crunchiness, the likes of which I haven't heard before. Distortion is smooth but growling all at the same time. What I'm really impressed with is how responsive the lower frequencies are. They ring out heavily but stop on a dime when I mute the guitar as well. Beautiful!

I will say though, if I was a Herbert owner I'd try mixing 2 pairs of SED EL34's with 1 pair of TAD 6l6GCSTR's. Someone try it and tell me how it sounds. :D

wow - who would have thought that trying to order a set of svetlana winged c el34's would be so difficult ??
ive just been on the phone to watford valves (UK) - asked him about svetlana winged c's and asked for the late distortion models .
he went on and on and on about there being no such thing for svetlana , that this was a groove tube rating only and that i should contact peter diezel and ask him what his test conditions were , what his test paramaters were , is the GM low or high , bla bla bla .
he might as well have been talking russian - i have no idea at all what he was talking about.
so peter , if youre reading this - what the hell was he going on about ???

I think the "distortion rating" is only used at dougstubes.com. Given the choice, go with the "late" rating, but my understanding is you should be fine ordering these tubes from any reputable dealer.

I've followed dougstubes closely. This distortion rating is something he newly introduced within the past several months, so you could likely ignore it completely. :) Another good dealer is kcanostubes.com, but I'm not sure if they ship over to your side of the pond.

Yeah, I've bought tubes from a variety of places and never come across distortion ratings. Watford are awesome but pretty expensive. I shipped over a quad =C=s from http://www.srs-webstore.com, got fast service and a tightly matched set; and, more to the point, they sound great! You just need to make sure you've got them biased properly.
