I have heard alot of good things about these tubes Winged C EL34s, but I see on the link provided that they are available in 3 ratings (Early, Average and Late Distortion Ratings. Here is my question, My Herbert is still on 1st set of tubes, and still sounds unbelievable, but when it gets to the point of re tubing, I was wondering, If I went with the C winged EL34s, which rating would you guess would be best with a Herbert, cause the Herbert to me seems to get its tone from the tereffic preamp section, so I am not sure what effect you would get or gain, with the 3 different rated types? Any opinions on the ratings versus achieved tones? Thanks for any comments on this subject :)

Please go with the late distortion rating.
These tubes have the best quality.

Great answer, Straight from the man himeslf, Thanks Peter

This is a timely post, as I am ready to re-tube; currently still on the originals after well over a year.

Regarding the tube recommendation of SED-EL34 (winged C):

I know that you can get matched tubes as either a pair or quartet. My question is, how do you handle the need for 6? Do I just need to get 3 matched pairs? Or one matched quad + a matched pair?

Also, is the above link (Doug's Tubes) a place that you guys would recommend? Any other/better suggestions for quality/price regading tube purchases?

Thanks in advance to any/all those that respond,

Stu

Nick, Larry: Maybe we should hook up for some jammin, beer, whatever. I don't believe you're too far away.

Hell, if I got time sure, would also depend on distance  .

Edit: Also, Larry, I just found out you know a good buddy of mine named George, he's in a band called Lye, pretty damn good guitar player, got him set on a Herbie now haha, he's selling organs as we speak.

3 pairs would be fine

I'm thinking about ordering a quad of these tubes for my Einstein and I was wondering, what rating do I get, early, average or late distortion. Sorry if this question has already been asked. Thanks  :D

The later the longer they stay alive - and in the end its up to you and how you are biasing the tubes.

Thanks Peter. One last question (and it's a dumb one). I now have the 3 matched pairs. Can you please tell me if there are specific sockets that each pair has to go in, or do I just make sure that matched pairs are next to each other? I hope that makes sense! :)

Please do not put the pairs next to each other.

The pairs go like:
1 & 6
2 & 5
3 & 4

Like in a fancy restaurant where you have a million tools to dine with. ;)

This begs the question: if the VH4 has 3 pairs of tubes in the power section, are different channels routed to specific pairs of tubes and if so, what is the matrix. I wonder about this because I'd love to mix things up a bit and maybe use 6L6's for the first channel and the 34's for the rest.

Thanks,

The VH4 only has 4 tubes... the Herbert has 6. Power tubes don't work the way you're thinking - it's using them all to produce the total wattage. You can remove a paid to cut the wattage in half, but it doesn't direct different channels to different power tubes.

My previous amp, a Mesa Road King II, actually does have that ability - it's about the only thing I miss from it. Hope Peter does something similar with the eventual VH4 successor :D

Thank you!

I just put the el34 sed -c- in my Vh4 and they do sound good, But I was wondering if anyone else has had to mess w/ the eq setting much after installing these. All of my channels sound really good except my channel 3 seems to have gone a little muddy, I used to run the eq settings @ 12:00 for bass mid & treb but now I seem to having a little trouble finding the "sweet" spot on chl 3.
Anyone else having this happen?
Peter, do you have any input?
Thanks Guys!!! Happy New Year!!

Please play around with preamp tube V1, V3, V4. You should
get some fresh response again. Try to get 12AX7 highgrades
from Shuguang (Chinese), RFT or Tungsol.

I will give it a try, my preamp tubes are new 12ax7 Shuguang, But maybe I just need to try a few different ones. I will let you know how it works.
Thanks Peter

You are welcome !

The Shuguang sound very different. I only use
about 50 %.

Man that can get expensive, but I guess that is the way it is if you want the best tone possible.
I wish you sold "peter approved tubes" (ha) :D it would save us alot of time and money.
So what is your preference (brand) for preamp tubes at this point ? I see you did not mention ruby tubes

So how would you compare the Svetlana/SED =C= EL34s to the EL34BSTR tubes that came stock on the earlier Einsteins? I've always liked Svetlana tubes (the REAL Svetlana, not that New Sensor crap) and liked their 6L6 tubes in the Einstein especially for cleans.
