Any VOX AC30 players here?

Didn't it start out as an amp from an organ? Taken out of the organ and turned into a guitar amp?
:) No ... Actually they were the first amp designed from the ground up for guitar. No amp before them was originally designed for guitar.

Mo move to 6:58 if you're not interested in Brian's non-amp goodies...

The AC30H2/AC30HH is definitely the one to own. The EF86 preamp is a must-have!

Since we're talking AC30 tone here - check out these Steve Snider clips of the Bogner Goldfinger 45. I'm hearing an almost VOX EF86 preamp type vibe in the two gain clips. Incredible tone!

I'm going to score a 15, as I think this would be the best for recording purposes and really getting that brit-grit tone down. I can't really see jamming or gigging with this amp, so it's not as though I'd need huge power. I'm more into just playing it - and getting it recorded.

Interesting feedback on the board here....a lot of closet clean-chime lover it would appear

Cheers,
Mojo

Used to have the following Vox AC30CC1 with Alnico Gold, Vox AC15TBx, and Vox AC50CPH. Now have a '66 Vox AC50. I love the AC50, great amp.

I have been kicking around getting a Vox AC4HW1 or AC15HW1.

Played a few and recorded a few. Great amps and there's a reason why they are one of the most recorded amps in history.

If you are going to buy make sure you get alnico blues and I would push for a "TB" made in england, as they sound better. I actually bought myself a Ac15tb as it breaks up a little more (which is what I was going after). Think Tom Petty.....

Another amazing amp that is half the price of a Vox ac30 is the 60's Ampeg Gemini. Thats another studio legend and can do chimey clean to dirty rolling stones all day long.

There are some great AC30 clones out there, but none of them really nail that wonderful VOX midrange.
As a former Vox and Matchless dealer who has owned and played both (reissues and an original), I have to disagree with this statement. The Matchless C-series was able to absolutely nail any of the AC-30's tones, plus it had a bit more gain when cranked if you wanted it. I can't think of one reason to own a Vox over a Matchless unless its related to budget.

And so the "mission creep" begins

Here we go...!!

Will keep you all posted on my non-high gain amp pursuits

I've never played a Matchless, but the clips do not sound identical to an AC30 to me. I'm going to ask Pat Travers what he thinks? I may have to check into one.

Definitely try one out...I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Hard to place much stock in clips...way too many variables affecting what you ultimately hear.

I've got a cch that I just got back from being modded. Had the lyle caldwell
quick and dirty done to it. Lost a lot of headroom on the normal channel and it
breaks up a lot earlier now.

Great "edge of dirty" kind of amp. Just hope that it doesn't catch fire...

I was watching "Crazy Heart" tonight, and noticed an AC30 Heritage combo on the stage... Is the AC30 commonly used for modern country/bluegrass?

I had no idea Colin Ferrell could sing so good!

Yes, but if it doesn't say Vox on it, it isn't a Vox.

It's all about having the right labels on your gear, no?

;)

In keeping with the recent trend here, I think this thread needs to be renamed to: "WTF Vox?" :D
