The whole show is on YT. The vocals were all redone, some guitars were overdubbed, and there are two tracks that were actually recorded during soundcheck and the crowd noise was added later. If you search "Ozzy Osbourne Let The Devil Speak" on YT, all the songs are there. After hearing this for so many years, its neat to hear it raw and undoctored! https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... evil+speak

Kind of shitty that they only started really recording the gigs when Brad joined?? Apart from some sloppy fan footage of Randy, this is what we are left with. A shame. I listen to those bootlegs and Randy's tone is fucking massive as is his attack and vibrato. Everything is just on 10. Brad waddles and abuses his whammy bar with wimpy tone on this one..
Randy Rhoads is one of the reasons I started playing guitar. I was 14 when I heard about the plane crash and was absolutely crushed.
That said, I think you are being a bit over the top on your criticism of Gillis. I think he did an amazing job on short notice, and used his gear that he liked. He wasn't a Marshall guy. Who cares. It sounded
monstrous in a Mesa way.

I did not hear a "wimpy" tone at all. The whammy bar was a bit overkill, but that's just his flavor. It's all good.

"Wimpy tone" is of course purely subjective. His playing style just doesn't do the Randy stuff very well and he has a sloppy picking hand. But given that they were penny pinching at the time, I guess he fit the bill where some of the other candidates wanted too much $$.

I think Brad had some of the best live tone every recorded on that SOTD album..yep I have the vinyl when it first came out and CD to spin in my car. I like his playing of the Sabbath material.

Brad did fine filling in for Randy. He's a totally different player than Randy but he made it work. As a young and dumb senior in highschool I saw Randy on DOAM tour in Detroit in Feb 82 (awesome) and Brad in Ann Arbor in April 82 in the front row right in front of Brads spot (no so awesome). I (bunch others) had the double middle fingers stuck in his face just about entire show. In hindsight the show was really good and sadly 95% of the audience wouldn't know the difference if Randy, Brad or the Easter bunny was playing with Ozzy.

Brad is a cool dude and player. I actually sent him a few emails over the years apologising for flipping him off all night. I gained more respect for him later as I matured when I heard the story on how he prepared for the gig and how little time he had to get the material down with zero input from Ozzy on how he wasted him to play before being thrown to the wolves in front of 15,000-20,000 people. This would be similar to asking Jimi Hendrix to fill in for Yngwie Malmsteen on a weeks notice.

-saw RR on the BLIZZARD OF OZZ & DIARY tours-(never understood the disdain for RANDY'S tone, live his tone was fierce!!,.. mean as hell!! check out the MR.CROWLEY vid)-and then BRAD, we all where just like you, "who the hell is this blonde haired california surfer boy,... there's no way he can fill RANDY's shoes!!!"... we didnt give him the finger, we were to busy smoking weed in the pit-(anyone remember general admission?)-but at the end of the concert, the worst we could say was BRAD smiled too much,... you should of heard what we said about ROB HALFORD after he came out, and rejoined the PRIEST..

Man, I just bought that SOTD DVD. Worst DVD ever. The audio is dubbed so poorly that the vocals don't line up with Ozzy's lip movement, and the guitar sound don't line up with what Brad is playing. I love seeing a cymbal being hit on the screen and no sound ;).

you now know the reason it was never released at the time

I remember seeing it at a friends house in `83 , he taped from MTV when it aired . I don`t remember it having those issues you mention but then again we were high as kites when we watched it . Now that I think about it I`ve got a bootleg DVD of it somewhere , I`ll have to check it out

I know for a fact that there is pro footage, but at this point there is not enough $$ in it for sharon to release it (remember they have to buy the footage first, and the guy that has it probably wants big $$ for it...like Bob and the "grail")

you also have to remember that at the time ozzy and sharon had F'all money so didn't really have the luxury of having lots of money to spend on things like live video, so most of their money probably went into getting ready for filming the show that is now the "speak of the devil" DVD....they weren't to know randy would die before it was recorded

How do you know 'for a fact' that there is pro footage? Have you seen it, or read about it?

-ahhh yes, but I was way ahead of the curve, I traded all my album's-(had to put pennies on the needle so it wouldn't skip any ways)-for the far superior 13 cassettes for a penny deal, under 4 different aliases of course, I remember puka Joe, tried, TRIED TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL OFF MTV that night!!!... So we beat his blasphemous ass and drank his beer,.... AGAIN!!

After a week of scouring the internet, I also am starting to think there is more Randy footage out there then they have released. (Maybe due to $$ reasons). In fact there is a ton of bootleg stuff that has been added to youtube over the years but unfortunately between pro and bootleg, nobody focuses enough on Randy! I mean he is solo'ing and you see Tommy's bass drum or Ozzy clapping like an idiot. All things aside, I am happy there is more available to me now then when I was younger so I will take it. It is awesome also to see bootleg show to show, Randy is just about awesome very night and mixed up his phrasing as he felt like it. Very cool to hear. Hopefully one day some better footage will come out but at this point, the new Synergy amp line has a better chance of making it out before this would surface.
