I hardly use modulation but a very subtle chorus or phaser can work wonders and make the guitar sound like it's slowly flowing from side to side like a nice calm wave. The effect is great but after playing with it for a while then I turn it off, I realize that I just like it dry better.

Twenty years ago when I was playing gigs several times a week all I used was wah and modulation. It didn't matter what kind.

I have always loved modulation, but mainly preferred phase and flanger sounds. Lately, I’ve been loving chorus sounds. I prefer subtle modulation…not anything overbearing or domination the sound.

What do you guys like?

Here is what I have been tinkering with the past few days.

I have that Limiter, Phase 90 and have had the Flanger and Chorus. The Chorus I had was really subtle, could barely tell there was any, maybe it was messed up. Got rid of the Flanger and Chorus.
For modulation…Dimension C, Ce2, newer Boss stereo chorus and flanger. Fave flanger is the old ADA but I use it more for ship sounds.

The chorus has internal dip switches to adjust its level. On the lowest level it doesn’t modulate much. It could have been broken though🤷

If you notice, I converted the limiter and flanger to 18volts. Was actually pretty easy and the power cord opening fits the power jacks perfectly. The limiter picked up a bit of AC hum, the 18volt mod 100% eliminated it. I even use it with high gain.

I have an early flanger that has a magical sound… I left it stock. I’m afraid to play it too much since I don’t want it to die. 🤣. They aren’t all created the same.

My ADA Flanger is AC powered too. You may have mentioned the 18 v mod before, interesting. That chorus could have been set on low, had it many years ago. Always wanted to try the micro, never have though.

Dave, what does the limiter do for your tone ? I know generally what a limiter does, I’m asking how/what it does for you ?

I love modulation…so much that I really want to buy/build a Vibratone/Leslie.

I use a Retrosonic Phaser, EVH Flanger, and Sabbadius Fillmore Vibe on my ‘in front of dirty amps’ pedalboard. I need Chorus but never bond with them and don’t have one. Something about that hollow/metallic tone they impart.

The limiter adds a tiny bit of mid range…but it is pleasant and hardly noticeable. I don’t look for any tonal change with it though. As you know, but just in case others are curious, the limiter is kinda like a compressor, but with more options. The sensitivity is how much squash you want and output is volume. Where it shines is the attack and release. Attack is how fast a note gets squashed and release is how long the note stays squashed. It’s more of a feel thing. I like it to add compression to the instant the note is hit, then allow the note to bloom after. Obviously it’s easier to play and sound good when you get instant squash 👍

Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe, Electronic Mistress, Poly Chorus, Phase 90, MD-500, CE-2W, BF-2, HF-2, FL9,etc... I'm sure I have others.

I'm kind of interest in the BOSS DM-101. Not just for delay. The modulation.

I go for the Eventide H949 for modulation.

Used it on the lead guitar track here..

I love some good modulation, but I know how easy it is to overdo, hah. So because I'm just a little afraid of that, I probably use it less than I could get away with.

Totally love a good VH Balance style pitch shift effect for a "chorus that doesn't oscillate" thing. A Univibe is my favorite "big obvious swirls" modulation effect and a Phaser is my favorite "just barely something there" kind of effect. Analog delay with modulation is tremendously useful and versatile, it can do anything from giving you some floaty depth to being a straight up old record player nostalgia machine.

I love whatever effect Dave Murrey uses when soloing on some of Maiden's slower and moodier sections. A little modulation on clean tones, like the intro to "Hey You" by Pink Floyd as well. That, or a full-on Steal Away/Unchain the Night flanger tone, lol.

You continue to cost me money… 😂

Pink Floyd's The Wall is all Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger. That is how I like to use Flangers.... basically as a metallic sounding Chorus.
