Are locking tuners that much better than standard tuners?

Just wondering what you guys think about locking tuners like Sperzels. Do they really hold tune that much better than something like Grovers?

I personally found it's more of a convenience issue than stability related, but the removal of string slack around the post probably contributes to stability under certain playing conditions IMO.

That's pretty lame, what other high quality locking tuners are there? I think Grover makes some?

grover, planet waves, fender, i've just always used sperzels, cause i was familiar with them. i'm gonna look on ebay, and see, i think a few companies are making locking tuners now.

I don't know I'd say the HOLD tune better. they seem to be more "accurate" or touchy maybe. and part of that comes from not having multiple string winds around the tuner pole. like old Kluson tuner on Gibsons tend to wear out when they get old and slip some. I haven't seen that with Sperzels. I've had a set for 10 years on a guitar. I like them more for the ease and quickness of use. what do Caparisons come with? don't they come with locking nuts? what kind of guitar are thinking of putting them on?

The "touchy" part is just because the Sperzels have low gear ratios (12:1) and thus are not as accurate as most modern tuners. G&L also uses low gear ratio tuners and I hate those as well. 16:1 nad 18:1 tuners allow for more accurate and easier tuning IMO.

For locking tuners I like Gotoh Magnum Locks though I certainly haven't tried everything on the market. Schaller, Grover, Planet Waves, Kluson and Steinberger also have locking tuners.

They help with tuning stability a bit but IMO the main benefit is easy string changes. I honestly wish all guitars came with locking tuners considering they can be made to look exactly like non locking ones.

-faster to change strings
-not necessarily more accurate than good Grovers etc. but worth it for whammy guitars with no locking nut
-thicker than standard gauge strings may not work with them

Yeah, I guess those were all covered by others but I felt like chiming in too. :)

My guitars all use Grovers or stock tuners (Yamaha and Ibanez ones which are good), but I also use standard bridges. Because of this I don't miss locking tuners. I can string a guitar nearly as quickly with these too, since I'm used to restringing guitars.

I'm actually using a 60 for the low E on my Explorer, since it's short scale. I use a 56 on 25.5" scale guitars. :(
I drilled out the hole on mine so a 60 fits, very easy.

Tell you what man. I've recently aquired 2 guitars in the last few weeks that both have Sperzels, and I can't believe how GREAT they are. I can't belive I've never had these before. They stay in tune unbelievably well and changing strings takes about 3 minutes.

I love em.

Ditto!!!

I use a 60 low E in Eb on a 24.75 hurrrrr

The Planet Waves tuners are AWESOME, I have them on my Juggernaut and my Explorer. Those are the tuners that come stock on all Gutierrez Guitars......

Try 'em you wont be disappointed.

:D

schaller also makes a damn good locking tuner, I have them on all my EB/MMs and they stay in tune very well

Schaller mini locking tuners

I have a Charvel San Dimas Re-Issue that has Sperzel tuners and they work really well, but nothing will replace an actual Floyd type of locking nut for tuning stability. I have an ESP with a Floyd and it rarely goes out of tune.

Sweet, that's what I would need for my Explorer. Maybe I'll order a set...

I think locking tuners on a non-trem guitar is not needed. The proper way to lock on the strings on the post is all that is needed. Lockers are nice, but I only put them on a Strat or some other non-locker trem guitar.

How do locking tuners make it easier to change strings? I got lockings on my EC, but I don't really notice any speed increase...

Get the Planet Waves, they will cut the excess for you, just pull through the eyelet, start tuning up the tuner will cut it, and tune to pitch....

They are AWESOME!!!!

Because you don't have to leave any slack- just pull the string tight, lock it down, and tune up. It's very fast and easy, you can change a string in mid set and be ready to go in a minute.

I can throw a 60 through my Planet Waves locking tunings nor problem (and also through my PRS/Shallers). I really like the planet waves locking/trimming tuners a lot. Very smooth action.
