Are The Scorpions and/or Uli John Roth Overrated?

I’m not familiar enough with his work, but the stuff I’ve heard is definitely cool. The Frank Marino cult comparison thing is funny. That cult is totally justified. Even if he had just recorded the Juggernaut album, that would have locked him in forever.

I think the same is true of his first live album.

Roth, Michael Schenker and Jabs were all killer players. The first two seem to get all the accolades but I think Jabs was criminally underrated. Love drive, Animal Magnetism and Blackout had some incredible riffs and lead work.

Matthias is a BADASS. I love that guy's guitar playing.

From about 14 years old to my early 20s, Blackmore was my #1; until I heard Holdsworth.
Yeah I like Holdsworth too. I bought Metal Fatigue in high school and was totally confused. Took some years before coming back to it and understanding /getting it.

Deep Purple and Rainbow are some of my favorites. The Rainbow vid from San Antonio 82, Ritchie actually plays some guitar and seems to be having fun for a change 😎

Never a big fan of the Scorpions, thought they were ok; but compared to Sabbath, Purple, Priest, Maiden, ... not so much. Much prefer Blackmore to Uli when it comes to guitar skills, and Iommi is a riff master. IMO
Blackmore is someone I never appreciated much. He seems like a weird guy, ans his playing never sparked any interest. Deep purple wasn't my thing......except Perfect Strangers was a great album imho....mostly due to Ian's vocals.

There is a lot of 70's hard rock and blues-rock that seems to be overlooked now. Steve Mariott is another guy that was pretty talented on guitar/vox that you just don't hear about often. It's surprising to me that more rock guitar guys don't mention them.
Yes, Marriott's another one of my top musicians, especially Small Faces and early Humble Pie

I still get goosebumps from this song as proven by listening to it right now and having the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

This song changed my life!!!!! I heard this and I changed everything with the way I looked at mastering that tone!!! I was into Hendrix big time, well, so was everyone else. Eddy hadn't shown up yet so Uli was the best I heard, I love Trower, but Uli was further.

love that solo and Uli’s hendrix hippy vibe and classical melodies that definitely influenced michael and yngwie.
but don’t think they would have reached 80s metal superstar status without the shift jabs and schenker brought ala lovedrive.

I liked them in da 80's, now not really.
A friend in the guitar industry had a meet n greet with Mattias Jabbs.
Friend said he was the biggest tool he ever met.

Love the Scorpions , fortunate to see them live many times . Out of all the shows I’ve attended over the last 45+ years only Van Halen in 1981 topped this one from the Scorpions

Jabs is the king of the lead break between verses, he's an incredibly musical player and a guy who writes lead breaks that aren't difficult, but that are memorable because you can sing them. So it begs the question, what are we talking about here? Do you want technical playing? Are you looking for precise picking patterns and sweeps or are you thinking of the music? There is no question the Scorpions are right where they should be where reputation is concerned. I think they died out substantially after the Tease Me Please Me / Wind's of Change album but were a force in the 80's.

Uli is definitely as good as people say he is. He's a special type of player who has never really cared what anyone thinks of him or his music. Great vibrato, great sense of melody, quirky playing at times but the whole thing works. Going to see him is like having some sort of weird cosmic experience because of all the visual stuff he has and how he dresses and plays. There is also zero doubt that he influenced Malmsteen. I think for being "1st" in his genre and touching on the neoclassical thing in a rock context, you can't take anything away from the guy. I really like his writing with the Scorps. There is some great stuff there and awesome tone for the time period. Again, how do you judge guitar players. Solely by their technical skill?

I enjoy listening to both players. But fans of each tend IME to be very passionate, which is fine w/me

Alvin Lee comes to mind

Scorpions can be a fun band to listen to, no question but I have a hard time with the hardcores praising the playing of UJR. He's not that good, sorry. Prove me wrong and link some videos that will change my mind. Not to mention, he wasn't even involved at the time Scorpions blew up with their "hit" songs.

What say you RT...Obviously I'm an asshole. Have been for many years now but do Scorpions suck and does UJR suck harder?? DISCUSS!! :checkthisout:
Nope. Killer band. Very talented dudes. Uli always struck me as an odd duck but super nice and talented. Them and Van Halen on the monsters of rock tour was killer. I was in high school then if I remember correctly….

Uli wasn’t with them then was he? I saw that up in Maine when I was in HS—June and it was 40 degrees and pouring rain. Scorps were great, but I don’t recall Uli being a part
