If you want zakk tone it's all about emg's. I have an Aldrich and its tighter and clearer/ articulate the. The jb

Yeah, but I think a JB, an Aldrich or an EMG should get him in the ballpark. It sounds to me by his other post that he isn't even remotely in the ballpark to Zakk or anything else 80's ish.

Pick harder, lay into it

May I ask how you had the chorus and verb setup on that?

The BE channel of the small box is much more aggressive then a 800. Like double the gain , be happy to take a look at your amp.

My small box sounds a million times better than my brothers 50 watt jcm800 plus there is way way more gain...

Man this amp continues to impress the hell out of me

I love mine as well. I run my in 8 ohm setting...it seemed to make the amp "bigger." (keep in mind mine is a combo) Where is your's?

Your Small Box sounds great . Was the xtra gain mod and SAT switch on there when you bought it , was it added , did you buy it new ?

My Smallbox is nowhere near as agressive as a jcm 800. There's obviously more gain but the punch isn't there. When playing louder trough a 4x12, it's just impossible for me to play legato or any kind of shredding on the be channel. The amp really struggle to keep up. Delay in loop makes things even worse, like the echos to some degree is choking the direct signal. No punch, no sustain, no shred, no echoes, no 80s tone

I've owned two 2203x amps in the past. My Smallbox has way more gain and is very punchy. Maybe you got a bad tube????

Lost count on how many tubes I've tried. Apologize for bringing this crap into your thread. Just getting frustrated over not getting this thing to sound right. Anyway, great playing and sound. Keep it coming

The sat really is the only thing giving it more gain. I did a very slight tweak that tightens is up just a little to be a touch more hard rock. Record a clip without the sat also it still can be heavy.
My stock Smallbox can get extremely heavy sounding. If someone can't get good heavy 80's tones out of a Smallbox then their is something wrong somewhere. I have been playing on and off all day today and my amp just sounds like a beast. I don't even have the gain cranked on my BE channel.

Hhmm... I can't get 80's tone from mine with or without pedals. My smallbox is collecting dust in my basement. Using my marshall jmd1 with jcm 800 preset instead. My dealer told me that the amp was not meant for playing those "modern" tones. I regulary listen to all the great clips posted on youtube, and this is no exception. So maybe I need a Sat switch or something is wrong somewhere

What type of boost are you using ? I`m using a TC Electronic Spark Boost set as a clean boost with toggle in mid mode , gain on the Small Box using the BE channel at about 7(right in between 2 & 3 o'clock) and it just screams tones of Warren D and George Lynch , now if I could only play like those guys.

I'm not using any boost. My Suhr with Aldrich pups is enough

From one of your posts it said "with or without pedals" so I thought you might have been using to tried a boost. Trying a TS type boost could get you into that saturated 80s hard rock tone , it worked for me

I have a Keeley DS-1 and a Barber Direct Drive. Don't need them with the amp. With the volume at 11:00 or so the amp has loads of gain, sustain and punch

oops were getting our signals crossed this post I quoted was the guy that couldn't get enough gain out of his SB and I think you thought it was meant for you , sounds like your obviously getting plenty of gain out of yours with that saturation switch

TS9 reissue and a BB mb Preamp set up with gain low and volume higher. I also have an EP booster. Rolling the gain back to say 5 on the be channel and activate these pedals turns muffled and muddy. Running them into plexi ch things get even more muffled. No plans on putting a Big Muff in front

Well shoot I guess I`m out of recommendations except for maybe the tubes , are the tubes all stock ?
