Battle of the Marshalls

The Jubilee is surprising in that you can totally change both the gain structure and the voicing ( dark/smooth vs brute/cutting) with the turn of the knobs.

If you do not take the time to experiment with it.....you totally miss the genius that hides in this box.

If you want a Brite cutting rock setting.......start with Joe Perry's everything on "7", and adjust to your liking.
I agree, the EQ actually does what an eq should do on an amp lol in giving so much range like that vs other amps, but it still despite that couldn’t get as much growl on powerchords or overall richness or warmth to its tone vs the 1979 JMP2203 I had at the time. Couldn’t get as raw sounding either, but I liked that it was tighter, more gainy and better at lower volumes

The John Norum and Michael Schenker secret sauce... the 2205 circuit. But I'm a 2203/04 with a few minor tweaks and boosted guy. ultimately.

I set mine to 7's across the board and as MV goes up, I dial back the preamp to 4 for Matias Jabs tightness.

With a Jubilee, you have to dime either the lead master or output master, then whichever is low acts as your MV. Personally I dimed the output master so I could balance the dirty vs clean at gigs. Or at least have one of the masters above 7.
The amp will sound thin if you don’t run one of the masters up that high.

..and I have a 1972 Superlead that chews up and spits out any of the 20+ JMP/JCM 800 2203/4s I owned. Lol

No contest. Push, clarity, thump....NMV Marshalls for the win.

OP, I'd go Jubilee as it's easily more versatile...great lead channel, great clean (best of any Marshall post 1970) and a good loop...plus the EQ is by far the most reactive of any Marshall ever made. And they are hard to find. I've had over 10 originals, and 1 2555x.
There should be a warning announcement if directly comparing an easy to tame master volume Jubilee to your 72 SL running wide open: "Drop the Jube and grab some lube."

What are your output master, input gain and lead master at?

Have you checked bias?

I use a gain range 4 to 7, depend of the guitar and if want to boost it. I have master at 3-4 and lead master around 4-5. All the tubes are new and have the TAD EL34 RedBase. Not use it at loud volumes, it sound good without make me deaf.

If it’s thin sounding then it’s because you need to turn one of your masters up to 7 or more. Big difference imo

my lead master is on 10 and the output master on 6.... you will have good results by running the output master just shy of 8 and the lead master on 5/6... its a bigger bottom end thump that way.

With that volume up the Jube should be plenty thick, just still smooth (to me less interesting tonally) vs a ‘70’s JMP2203. It can be thin though vs some amps in comparison, but then again so can other amps since it’s all relative

No wonder it sounds like ass.

You MUST have output master at or above 6 on a Jubilee for it to sound as it should.

I know you say it sounds good with these settings; but I’d suggest diming your output master and use your lead master as your MV….if you push your output master higher than 7 it will sound much better/more full.

Do you read previous comments?
You said you run the master at "3-4".

That is less than 6.

So. Try your amp with the output master at or above 6....you can adjust the volume with the 2 other mv controls......if it still sounds thin.....it must be sick and in need of work.

Master low is never good. This is rig talk, not paddy cake. Turn that shit the fuck up!

So, I’ve got a friend of mine I’m making deal with on one of these Marshall’s.

1. ‘88’ Jubilee
2. ‘83’ Canadian 2204
3. Late 90’s 2203x

I’m currently shooting them out and there is a lot of similarities with all of them. The Jubilee has a bit of a shift in the mids than the other 2. I really digging them all ! But I’m leaning towards Jubilee. View attachment 238469View attachment 238466
What’d you end up getting?

I still haven't decided. Im still playing them all. Its a tough decision. They are all good in there own right. I may just keep 2. The 2203 and Jubilee! Lol. The 800's are raw and aggressive. The Jubilee is like a great modded 800 a bit more polished compared to the JCM's but still aggressive in its own right with out an OD. First world problems!
