The names have been changed to protect the innocent.

There was a guitar that popped up last fall that caught my eye. It's a high end guitar with good features made by a defunct and disgraced builder. These guitars are great, but don't get much money. I have two, and I have barely a grand invested in them both.

So I made a lowball offer to the seller. They had it listed at $2500, but I showed them where it sold for $1600 (new), and offered a grand. I got back a response similar to what you would find in the Off Topic section on here: A lecture on Chinese CNCs, the Election, the whole works. They countered at $1900, and I passed.

Months have passed. It's still listed. Now the price is set at $1700 (still more than new). Should I make another offer? Do I offer the same $1000, or do I offer $900 this time?

Here is the listing:
Jarrett Ibiza Platinum

750. You can walk back up to 9.

If you're actually interested just off what you're willing to pay. If you lowball too much you're just gonna piss him off. I've had some relentless lowallers before. I've actually considered just taking their offer, shipping them a box of dog shit and waiting for the claim and hilarity to ensue. 🤣

I wouldn’t bother and would just forget that seller. Or offer $900 knowing he won’t take it. Once he counters your offer…your offer is no longer active/ binding.

He’s not going to come down to planet Earth tho.

It's not like you need the guitar. Lowball the shit out of him.

I don't have sympathy for snowflakes who get upset by lowballs but I guess the younger generation can't bear to be told their shit isn't worth anything.

Yeah. I have got great deals by lowballing. When others lowballed me, i ignored it. It never bothered me. It is how business is done with strangers on internet

They got big mad the first time I offered, so I feel like even the same offer is going to piss them off pretty good. They did drop the price since then though, so they are motivated. All the other guitars by this brand at this price have been sitting for years on Reverb. $1000 might be the best offer they'll get.

So I might fire $750 at them.

You literally have nothing to lose. One time a guy lowballed me. But he said he is a kid just starting out and he doesnt mean to offend me, but it is all he had, and this was his dream guitar...
I felt myself wanting to help the kid out. I thought this was genius and used the same sob story every time I bought something.

As far as that kid, i found him and murdered him. (Not really. But i also didnt sell to him.)

@BeZo honestly this would be a lot less mysterious if we had an idea of the item in question lol

That might demystify the price discrepancy

[Redacted] guitars are not a popular brand.

I'll post a pic if he takes my lowball offer.

It’s all in your tone.

If you said, instead, “I really like this guitar you have for sale, but I unfortunately cannot afford your asking price. I’ve purchased a few of these, and paid $xxx, with that said, I could stretch to $900 for yours. If you find that agreeable, please let me know, I’d love have it. Thank you for your consideration.”

A softer touch will avoid the drama and likely lead to a negotiation.

I think being polite about it and showing a comparable sale and offering that is totally fair. Going another 40 percent below that though, yeah… I don’t respond to that.

ChatGPT:

“Hi there,

I hope you're doing well! I came across your listing for the guitar, and it looks fantastic. I’m really interested in it, and I was wondering if you would be willing to accept $X for it. I’ve attached some evidence of similar sales at that price to help with my offer. I understand if you’re firm on your price, but I wanted to check in and see if there’s any flexibility.

Thanks so much for your time and consideration! Looking forward to hearing from you”

You literally have nothing to lose.
It's true, and I have accepted some reasonable lowball offers before. Do I really want to keep refreshing and then making another CL ad for two or three months to get an extra hundred or hundred and fifty bucks out of it? Maybe if I were trying to run a business but I'd rather just get the crap outta my hair ASAP, and have money for other gear. If you start looking at $$$ losses on gear like a rental fee then it doesn't matter anymore.

There is a Chubtone on Reverb where they were asking several hundred more for used than it was new. Now, it's listed for basically what it cost brand new, and it still has to be shipped, taxes paid, and it's still used.

This smells like a misunderstanding tbh
It smells like a seller who doesn't understand actual fair market value. This is most sellers now, and is why they get pissed off or churlish when someone lowballs them.
