That one's also great. I'm a fan of OD2 orange myself
I've owned a few JVM205H's. OD2 Orange was definitely where that classic *modded* Marshall lived. OD2 Red was insane, but was also a screaming lead channel. It's a great amp.

Yep, original run had the real deal SED Winged "C's", a really great tube. And Chinese 12's.

I did load one of my backup JVM's with KT77's years ago and it sounded good. A little more low end etc...
Nice.

I still haven't gotten to opening it up. Was busy earlier.

I got a quad of old JJs in case the tubes are also kaput, but hopefully not.

This was the amp that supposedly was gonna put modders and small builders out of business cause it was just so amazing according to the popular folk here at the time. I’m sure it can sound great

No amp regardless of brand or tech has put modders out of business. As long as someone is willing to tinker and people are willing to pay modders are gonna have a platform. Same with small builders, always going to be a market, maybe small but it'll be there even with IR's and modelers they'll still exis.

What did you think of them? The second channel on the 205 was OD1 (3rd Channel) on the four channel.

Changed fuses. Amp turns on properly now. There's a microphonic buzz tho. And the volume's way lower than usual...

Good thing I just got a matched quad 😂

I agree, but that was the hype around here now almost 20 years ago about this amp. I believe there was even a big bulk buy of 20 amps or something so guys could get the thing early. It was supposed to be THE amp

A lot of guys back then seemed to overhype gear way more than now (with some ridiculous and stupid ways of describing it), where I think most are more levelheaded these days. I understand a lot of the appeal for some with JVM’s, but it’s not any competition at all for good modders or the right small makers IME

I remember those days. Most of those guys are long gone from here or just anonymously browse anymore but it was a ridiculous time for sure. Felt more like a cool kids club back then. Everyone was hanging off of Fortin's and Friedmans nuts LOL

Never mind.

Microphonic issue unrelated to volume issue. I retubed, volume issue was gone. Took another look at the original tubes

Turns out the no. 4 tube was oriented wrong (!!!)

So I put the original tubes back in, properly oriented, rebiased to 31.8mV (technically mA, but these have a bias probe) for each tube.

NOW the amp actually jumps to life a LOT more. Volume issue more than fixed. Amp is slightly louder than before, which makes me glad my OT didn't also die from one week of impedance mismatch. (since one of the tubes weren't installed properly)

Goddammit.

Anyways, I also found out my EMG 85 might not have been installed properly. It feedbacks badly. Big microphonic whine, where the SAs don't.

Pics attached are of the amp before I put the original tubes back in

I was in on that group buy. Steve VHT put that together. It had nothing to do with a Cool Kids Club!. It was a NEW Marshall and everybody wanted it.
I'll say this, the later JVM I had wishes it sounded like the older one. I had recorded that first JVM. I knew what it sounded like. The newer one wasn't there.
Maybe bad bias, who knows, it broke within a year.

Crazy adventure, but it sounds like it's finally sorted after all that. Really hope you enjoy the amp. I still love mine to this day even if it isn't the perfect "end all be all" amp forums tried to make it out to be nearly...shit...nearly 20 years now:

Still gets great sounds, still insanely versatile, still scratches that Marshall itch, still a badass tube amp overall. 100w, has MIDI, four dedicated channels, two types of FX loops you can use. Lots of mods for it, too.

The cool kids comment wasn’t about the JVM group buy, it was about the vibe of the forum as a whole at the time.

Yeah, I think hcaf was still going strong at that point and this was kind of the new other place that was kind of more like a group text now for the cool kids. It’s kind of weird thinking what a different world it was then, MySpace was only a thing my underground music friends were on, there were no smart phones yet, YouTube was barely a thing, it was check the 25 new pages from two hours ago at hcaf on your computer lol
