First post here….

I currently have a cheap gls sm57 knock off and a tc helicon go mobile interface. I just like recording clips of my cabs to compare nothing fancy. I want to upgrade the setup. What would yield better results upgrading the mic to a real sm57 (or something else $150 or under) or getting a better interface. Keep in mind I’m not buying a computer so whatever interface it’s got to work with an iPhone. If there’s not going to be a noticeable upgrade to what I’m getting now I won’t bother, from what I’ve read that gls mic is pretty solid for $20 but I honestly wouldn’t know.

Can't go wrong with a tried and true SM57 or SM58. Another good option is a Sennheiser e609 or the next step up e906.

Don't know about the interface though. I'm not sure what would be an upgrade for iPhone outside of getting a computer

I don’t know anything about that clone or iPhone interfaces unfortunately, but I’d lean towards getting a real SM57. Guys than can use whatever mic they want often still use them, so you can’t go wrong with them.

Lewitt MTP 440 DM is a contender too in that price range, loving it over the 57

I think the sennheiser e609 as an easier guitar mic for beginners, and still an industry standard.

Audix i5 is in the same family as 57 and I prefer it in snare. Bit more body and directness to it. But you can never go wrong with a 57 or 58

I just went down a mic rabbit hole, ended up back at the sm57, this thread is making me want to try the audix i5 lol
Yeah try it out. IME the 57 worked better when everyone used tape. The slight harshness / brashness of the 57 was peanut butter and tape was jelly.

The Audix D2 I’d say is still my favorite for guitars.

Real sm57 and mix with one of the following: md421, e906, i5. Blend to taste. You can get into condensers and ribbons but it’s not necessary.

Stupid deal of the day is a vocal mic but seems like a solid deal. Would this be a good choice to mic cabs?

Not really man, just get a 57 and work with mic placement and amp settings until it sounds pretty good. If it doesn't, keep experimenting until it does!

More gear will not help until you've been through this process, I absolutely assure you of that.
