I am ordering some 7025s for my preamp, the cost in the shopping cart was too low...j/k. I was wondering if NOS tubes last longer in the PI since it is hte hardest working preamp tube. Does anyone notice tonal differences here? Suggestions or Knowledge welcome

Just a headsup but I own over 20 tube amps and have played for years and play every night, and have never once had a PI tube die.... Good luck though! :)

That is great info. I always wonder about it. I dont' know if it matters or not how loud you play, because i play very loud, so i thought maybe it would only last for like 4-6 years

I play loud too. I think my lowest wattage amp is a Splawn Competition, or a few Trainwreck clones and most are either 50, 60 or 100 watts, and I play loud with my band (Stage volume is too loud) and at home I'm lucky to be able to play loud (my ears aren't lucky anymore though) . .Anyway, I actually measured at home the other night just for fun and it was hovering around 106db. I seriously have never had 1 go bad. They also don't affect tone near as much as a V1 or V2 tube on most amps, but if you really want a NOS one, either RCA, Sylvania , or GE would be fine. I have a huge tube collection and I wouldn't waste any of the really good stuff for the PI's This is only my experience , and others might vary, just trying to save you money. Get different tubes for the other positions though if you don't have a lot of tubes, as then you can experiment with tone . :)

yeah. 105-109 is my sweetspot for home playing, lol. most of my work is there

I like Tungsram for NOS.

If you HAVE to buy new the Mesa PI is okay.
i was actually going to just message you. I figured you would have something up your sleeve. I just wanted to hear everyone's opinion. i will look into the tungsram. I have used svtk lps until i got the wizard. i noticed he had a jj there, and i know some amps supposedly don't like longplates there.

At least for gainy amps the Tungsram stuff is just the best IMO. That's where I'd start.

ended up grabbing a JAN Philips 12AX7WA. They made me feel like it was the last one in the world. Good salesmanship, lol

Those have been my favorite American tubes. In my Wizard MTL, mostly just tried the V1 position and my favorites there were that JAN Philips, Mullard Blackburn and GE, but that amp strangely I find much less sensitive to tube swaps than most of my other amps

low noise hardworking balanced = JAN Phillips 5751

yeah. I grabbed some EH 7025 for the other positions just to see how they compare to the silver dragons for noise. I can only hear the noise when boosting, but I think that I can tame the rest of it with these. Wizards are quiet as hell, but I am very anti microphonic. I may try that Jan Phillips in v1 to see if i can hear the flavor of it.

I find their flavor to be growly, fat and warm and still fairly tight. Will be a bit scooped or hollow though in the mids compared to European tubes since that's just the American flavor for tubes vs European ECC83's

I prefer long plate tubes in the PI. I sort for high transconductance. I really like Ei and Telefunken long smooth plates.
I agree with this 100%. Even JJ ECC803S long plates are good in the PI and what I use when I do not have EI.. I have had PI tubes die on me in the past in reference to another post stating they never have.
