Bu is the Viper really comparable to an SG outside of the body profile? They're a lot thicker and even the sound seems more of a cross between SG and LP.

Hello Music has SG Stds for $998 if anyone is interested. I know OP wants non Gibson. Don't know if thats a great deal or not given Sam Ash someone says had them for $799. Just bought a Fender American Std Strat HSS from them for under $800. I know thats a good deal.

I would think edwards or any of the quality MIJ SGs would be a good bet. Guild s100s and esp vipers are both cool but kind of a different thing. I know the gibson crowd has already tried to ram them down your throat but it might be worth considering grabbing a gibson for a decent price and dropping it off at a quality luthier for a refret, fix up etc. It will still probably come out cheaper than most of the custom builders.

To me an sg should have a 1 pc body. It's hard to come across a new production Gibson these days that has one. It's pretty shitty that you buy a USA Gibson sg and can have up to 6 pieces of wood glued together for the body so I get why the op is a bit Leary. I would just buy used online if you don't have many stores in your area. Most of my guitars were bought online and almost all have been great experiences.

OK, Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but looking at your quote I simply see that you do not want a Gibson due to their lack of quality and craftsmanship. Maybe you should say that YOU dont think their build quality is up to their price structure so you would like other choices. It reads like a blanket statement of fact. I always try to type everything as I would say it right to their face and be clear about it, its really different when you put it into type and everyone else gets to analyze it. I try not to come off as an ass (but sometimes happens ) and some people it just comes out naturally . Anyway, their is only one real SG tone, if thats what YOU REALLY WANT you know the answer but I did suggest a good substitute if you want close to that tone with aPRS Mira and PRS craftsmanship is second to none. Good luck, its not too hard if you know what you are looking for.
