Best sounding metal amp you’ve ever played…

I’m gonna have to say the Engl Savage MK II 120 is a beast of a metal amp. Extremely tight without a boost. And meaty as fuck.
The savage is one of the only amps I’ve played that I feel like a boost hurts more than it helps.

Yes, 10 years ago I walked into Tone Merchants unannounced.

Loved going to that store because you just never know what you were going to see that day.

I walked in, and there was Rob hanging out with the founder of DAR. I don’t remember his name, but I remember how absolutely friendly he and Rob were. It was a prototype of some sort of the FBM. They were testing it together.

I guess they decided, hey we’ve tested it enough, but now we got an average Joe to test it out on. They put it in that room with all the tapestry, gave me a guitar and then I proceeded to just go full retard. They both went somewhere, while I had a few hours of alone time with that thing.

It was an incredible day I’ll never forget!
There's was one on Reverb a while back...For $7,000!!!

my old sig 5150. for some reason this one's a beast. i rarely change the eq, has a shit ton of gain at 1 1/2-2 for modern metal, and the quietest as far as noise for any 5150 variant I've owned... i might have just had a lucky cap job, idk..

Very cool! I’ve been to Tone Merchants also one time. There were some things I liked about the FBM I had, but when compared to the other amps I had at the time I couldn’t find a reason to justify keeping it and some of the things I didn’t like such as the more artificial sound got exposed a bit

I’d never buy one lol because I’m just not into that type of metal, but as a total bystander playing that thing and objectively speaking, it was pretty fuckin epic

Totally get it man, I was just a lucky fly on the wall lol

Wish I could just live at Tone Merchants

Death/Human was entirely recorded with a boosted 2203. I think it's a pretty good reference for death-metal.
Despite the name and their history and all, that band honestly never really sounded like death metal to me lol. I think of the standard death metal sound as being more like Cannibal Corpse or Deicide. A boosted 2203 can still imo work, but just not one of my top choices

I had my FBM built/programmed different from the others.
All three metal channels are full burn mode. No crunch/rhythm/lead.
And I run mine thru a specific speaker setup that plays to its strengths.
I know it is almost a synthetic type of sound, but I absolutely love it.
Still my favorite amp. The Ultralead is a close second.
Yeah I remember mine also being all 3 high gain channels that sounded similar to each other plus the clean channel. I try always to play also to each individual piece of gear I have’s strengths to get the most out of it and there were plenty of things I did like about the FBM, but I just couldn’t see ultimately a need to keep it for me vs the other amps I had at the time

After Scream Bloody Gore, I would agree.

If we are talking JUST metal...No consideration for versatility or other qualities:

Peavey 5150 II
5150s for sure are old faithful, always get the job done. While I don’t think they’re the best sounding out there and have reliability issues across the board, they’re great amps, and have probably been used on more metal albums than any other amp.

I just played my first fryette other day. It was great. I would love to try the d60 and 120.
I had an original VHT D60 with the choke, and a 2019 Masterbuilt 120. Both amazing amps that are deceptively versatile. I would have never had a single channel amp before those, but the amount of control at the guitar volume and coil splitting made it feel like a channel switcher.
