He used those cabs on the last two Lizzy tours he was on (in '07 & '08). They weigh a lot! He had 6 of them and we sold off 4 in 2000. However, a few years later we were after A/B'ing the 2 remaining cabs with his favorite Marshall cabs and the Wizard cabs sounded better and eventually he ended up getting some of the 4 previously sold cabs back. These are the "custom made" 4x12 cabinets I mention on the website and is quoted above.

Thanks for sharing that info Drew!

What speakers does John have in those Wizard cabs? And are they front loaded?

The one we opened had Celestion 65's and they are front loaded. The back panel edges are sealed up with no way to get the back off without destroying the cab. Each speaker has its own little round metal grill cover.

Drew please tell John the world is needing some new music from him. I still listen to the Whitesnake(1987) and first Blue Murder albums with great regularity. Also jam the Thin Lizzy cd alot. I think I prefer the Blue Murder and Whitesnake tone more than the TL tone.

Thanks. I did check out Tony's page. Looks like John is doing some recording but it would seem that it will not be a Blue Murder album. Unless I misread.

I would LOVE another Blue Murder record with the original lineup...

Did you have the Schematic yourself or did Fortin have it ? Can you describe the amp ? Extra pots or switches ? Different master ? efx loop ? extra tubes ? seperate clean channel ? 50 or 100 watt ? is it gooped ? if I asked Fortin for the GAINFREAK mod would he know what I'm talking about or would he be like " huh ?" ? Thanks for all the help here, I know this is getting long winded...
Wassup

It wasn't taken from a schematic. It was taken / Matched from an original Jose amp that Jose did back in the early 80's.

The amp is a bare bones Metro Kit that has a Push Pull master volume that adds / Subtracts a clipper circuit, it has 2 gains and you there is a push pull on gain 1 to that changes the character, It has a basic loop and its a single channel 100 watt amp.

Mike would definitely Know what you were referring to as well a Danny here in this thread!

Not trying to spam but The amp is up for sale after I do some clips with it.

Cheers!!

I think it was you that posted the original video Carl!

With that said, you have to get them to change your name back :D

Curt you are right!!! John checks the volume and toggle switch a lot. Lol. I remember reading that his LP Custom is a factory second. Pretty cool trivia.

man you totally got your vibrato from sykes gainy! i hear it now!

but if you ever start grabbing at your pickup selector like that i'll personally install a shock collar circuit to the selector switch!
turrets or nervous habit or what???? he was seemingly doing it for no reason at times?

I can't even tell you how many factory second 70's Les Pauls I've played over the years (at least 10) and EVERY ONE of them was friggin awesome. Of course, I had no money at the time, so they all got away. This applies to Standards, Customs, and Deluxes ...all finishes (wine red, sunburst, white, black, goldtop, etc...) . The Goldtop was all fucked up too...the headstock had been snapped off and re-glued and some IDIOT had put a Kahler on it...but the fuckin thing played like BUTTAH ! And it was like 400 bucks...I didn't want to spend the money on such a shit piece, but looking back on it, the head stock repair was well done and I could have removed the Kahler and had a luthier put some wood back in the rout and had the top re-finished and had a great goldtop for not alot of money. 70s Pauls are where it's at for me.

It's funny to me that SO many people on forums bag on Norlin era Lesters, but to me they're the best. I love the maple necks. The ONLY thing that sucks about them are the frets...too small. All of my heroes played Norlins.

From John's website:

AMPS: John uses Marshall amps and Mesa Boogie amps. For the last ten + years of Thin Lizzy tours or Sykes tours, John has been plugging his Les Paul straight into one 50 watt JCM 800 Marshall head running in to one Marshall 4x12 (or one of his custom-made made 4x12's). A back-up 50 watt JCM 800 Marshall and 4x12 are also on stage ready to go should the first amp go down.

For much of the Whitesnake '87 album and first Blue Murder album John used 2 Mesa Boogie Coliseum heads. These amps have a Mark III pre-amp section but use six 6L6 power tubes--giving the amps180 watts each! John also owns several Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+'s, Mark III's and some rack mounted Mesa Dual Recto heads. Other Mesa Boogie equipment includes a Tri-Axis preamp and a Strategy 500 Power Amp.

For speaker cabinets, John uses Marshall 4x12 cabinets, Mesa Boogie metal grill "Half Back" 4x12 cabinets, Mesa Boogie 4x12 Recto cabinets and some custom made 4x12 cabinets.

EFFECTS: The rack setup used during the later Blue Murder days included a Mesa Boogie Dual Recto head, a Mesa Boogie Tri-Axis Preamp, a Mesa Boogie IIC+ head, a Mesa Boogie Strategy 500 Power Amp, a rackmounted Dunlop Crybaby, a Lexicon PCM 41, a Lexicon PCM 70, and an H&H V800 Power Amp.

He also briefly used Wizard cabs on (I believe) the first Blue Murder tour

He used those cabs on the last two Lizzy tours he was on (in '07 & '08). They weigh a lot! He had 6 of them and we sold off 4 in 2000. However, a few years later we were after A/B'ing the 2 remaining cabs with his favorite Marshall cabs and the Wizard cabs sounded better and eventually he ended up getting some of the 4 previously sold cabs back. These are the "custom made" 4x12 cabinets I mention on the website and is quoted above.

One had been for sale locally - when i emailed you - you replied and confirmed what the seller had stated.

On the that video Carl linked to, John is most likely using a combimation of a rack mounted Dual Recto and a Mesa IIB.

How was the Dual Recto set in relation to the IIB?
