Both during their prime (dimebag around cowboys right?) (Hetfield around Justice)

1) which one has been more influential?
2) who's a better riff writter?
3) which one is your favorite?
4) why?

EDIT:

This is not about who's a better player (we all know dimebag can play circles around hetfield). This is about who's been more influential as a guitar player in the metal world.

Hopefully this post doesn't start a storm because really both players are awesome in my opinion.

For me Hetfield is the man. In the 80's I learned guitar based on his playing style. My downpicking used to be great and I owe it all to his influence.

I think Hetfield defined tight rhythm playing.

Well, the albums you named as being their "prime" could start an argument alone.

This is tough. If you're talking about skill then Dime hands down, but if you're going by importance and influence then I'd say Hetfield by a little bit.

I a HUGE fan of both but I don't really think Hetfield can hold a candle to Dime as a guitar player, much better at whoring himself out though.

While the 2 are like apples and oranges,I'd like to believe Pantera picked up where Metallica left off,in a way. But Hetfield,I won't say invented that style of music,I will say he refined it,and made it his own. Nobody can downstroke that fast, with his control.
That's my opinion!

Dime, Cowboys From Hell pushed Metal into what it is today, technically speaking.

I think prime would be Vulgar for Dime.

As far as who was mor influential.. Hetfield by a mile. Metallica is a household name. Pantera is not. Keep in mind when I say this that Vulgar and CFH are in constand rotation through my CD changer. However, James and Kirk have probably influenced more kids to pick up a guitar than any other metal band. Dime made us all want to practice more.

I don't think Puppets/AJFA era Hetfield can't be touched for rhythm work.

By the time Vulgar came out, Metallica was on the way out as the reigning metal band of the world. I like both bands, and think both of the mentioned guitarists were top of their genre at one time. To be honest though, Andy LaRocque and Jerry Cantrell have had a much larger influence on my personal playing.

I'm a HUUUGE Pantera fan, and 'tallica up to 91.

1) which one has been more influential? Jamez
2) who's a better riff writter? Jamez. the fast downpick riffs, I think I like the song structure better. and the riffs under the solos just rules. For Dime, Some of his riffs just sucked (like Walk) but the song is good none the less
3) which one is your favorite? Dime
4) why THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL His lead playin' is awesome. none have that legato

The main riff for Walk sucked? That's one of the simplest, yet heaviest riffs of all time

For me it is Hetfield hands down.. I don't know a single Pantera riff, so although I have HUGE respect for Dime, he hasn't influenced my playing at all.

Without a doubt. That riff kills. It's easy but still takes a certain finesse to sound right but suck? No way. I would have to give my vote to Hetfield. After Dime heard Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning is when Pantera went heavy. Before that they were glam. So James influenced Dime.

Although I'm not the BIGGEST Pantera fan I really did like them a lot. I will say this I always got super excited when there was a Dime interview in any magazine. It was always entertaining he was a great person with a cool attitude. It was never about gear either for me more the human element he brought to the interview.

Clearly Dimebag is a more skilled guitar player. But.....

1) James is more influential IMO, partly because its much easier for beginners to start with him vs. Dimebag.
2) Riffs - Tie. Both have written amazing riffs. Songwriter ? James, easily.
3/4) James influenced me alot more than Dimebag, so James for me.

Influential of course Metallica is more than Pantera. As a technical player yes Dime was more of a guitar player than Hetfield, but its not a fair comparison because one was a lead player and the other a rythem player.

I like Metallica's songs better than Pantera
