The reason the SOTD tone is so huge is cause it's stereo. He wasn't in stereo w/ Ozzy or Nightranger. Seems like it was just these gigs at The Ritz. Brad says he and Mark Newman came up the the sound.

ouch.

i was one of those that already had tickets for the diary show when the news broke about the crash. i was outside listening to the radio on my jvc ghetto blaster doing yard work when they announced the story and it could not believe it.
Wow . Crazy

Pretty sure that guitar has outlasted many amps!

Saw Night Ranger a couple years ago in a casino and he did a solo spot highlighting his time in Ozzy.

Kinda the same as well, granted we obviously missed the show on Thursday the 18th and was still bumming about that. Next day had gotten off work from my High School part time job, pulled into the driveway and heard the news. Journey's "Who's Crying Now" either played before or after the news but regardless everytime I hear that Journey song in reminds of getting the Rhoads news and sitting in my car dumbfounded.

RR was just a massive early influence on me. I had already been playing guitar for several years. Actually started playing the year before EVH exploded so I got to see that in real time but I was content to just be a rhythm player in all our little bands. Until I heard Randy. It'd be another 25 years before I shared the stage with another guitarist, that's the impact he had on me.

As for Brad, I used to watch the live Diary video with Ozzy constantly. Thought Brad did a helluva job. And frankly the Speak of the Devil album was my deep dive into Sabbath. Was not a fan beforehand so because of Brad, got some education into Sabbath. Still not a fan but again, thought Brad did fantastic on that album. Then got to see Brad and Night Ranger open for Kiss on the Creatures of the Night tour. They rocked. Then again so did Kiss, in fact musically that was the best I had ever seen Kiss. They played with a vengeance trying to claw their way back.

I remember while in the 7th grade Oz came to town and Randy was hospitalized with the flu and and they cancelled. Ma would not let me go to concerts yet. I remember wanting soooo badly to go. VH would come thru Fresno every year and missed several tours early album due to mom guarding her little sinner of a son

I saw Randy on both tours and was devastated when I heard the news. Felt like a gut punch.
Brad did a great job on the Ozzy and Sabbath songs. That tone is not for me but he played his a$$ off.

Lol. We must have the same mom

brad’s tone on that tour was massive and he did a respectable job covering randy’s world but it was obvious no one was going to replace that legendary player perfectly.

not seeing randy, gary moore on the victims of the future tour open for rush (both whom i never saw live), danny gatton live at the coach house and ted green live at NAMM were my biggest guitar missed opportunity regrets.

My holy grail VH ticket stub , i’m somewhere in the audience in those three 1981 live videos

I saw Randy in Jan 82. Toledo Ohio Sports Arena. My parents were cool, had an older friend that could drive. Gen admission so I got right down front, been playing a couple years and was really into Randy. Awesome experience! Pretty bummed a few months later. Like was posted earlier, Speak of The Devil was my intro to Sabbath. Never seen Brad live, never cared that much for NR past the first album. Would have been cool to see SOTD live I think.

I saw Gary open for Rush here in San Francisco. I went specifically to to see Gary and he was awesome . Neil Schon came out and jammed with him towards the end of the set

Lots of regrets as well. Several of mine.

Thin Lizzy for sure. They were just never around my area that I can remember when I was young and when old enough, they had really ceased touring the US. Of all my favorite bands they are still the one I continually listen too.

Queen as well - in fact in '82 Queen played Atlanta on the "Hot Space" tour, their last US tour with Freddie and at that time most of us were soured on them because that album was so bad.

Obviously missing Rhoads last show which I had the ticket.

to have had tickets to his last show and missing it takes the Randy regret cake. my brother had tickets to Woodstock and the roads in were so jammed he never made it.

i wondered if Gillis tone with Ozzy had any influence on Metallica going Mesa. the timing would be about right. i distinctly remember the guitar tech for Brad hitting a few chords during the final sound check before the show i went to and hearing it cranked in the arena without the band, it was the most outrageous rock guitar tone i’d ever heard and the reason you lived for live shows back then. lynch/ulak tour was the other biggie for tone.

maybe Carl’s point about these guys running in stereo contributed to the wow factor?

The MTV concert from 1982. They titled it Speak Of The Devil when they released it on DVD about 10 yrs ago but it was actually recorded on the Diary tour

holy shit ..... I remember this ....... Frack I'm old ...
