Maybe I'm just nuts, but I have an old JB from the early 80's that I swear to god sounds better than the newer models. I've had it in the bridge of my LP for almost a year now and it sounds amazing.

I bet if you ohmed that out, the resitance would be a lot lowwer than the new production ones. I talked to Mark Cameron about this. He has an old one that ohms out at around 9k, where the new ones are what......14k or something?

Maybe that's it. All I know is that if I play that guitar through a Cameron it melts the clothes off women.

They also used some AlNiCo II magnets in the early ones as opposed to the Al V that's used in current production models. Might be worth a shot switching magnets and giving it a whirl, I hear the people that try it love it.

You may already have heard it Dan...Jeff Beck's vaunted dual-hum telecaster that Seymour Duncan put together had a Jazz and Al II JB in it, I believe with 250k pots. I also think its closer to the Holdsworth humbucker that the custom shop puts out, and we know how that goes ;)

I've heard the holdsworth is a JB with an alnico II and all screws. Ive also heard it has an alnico V. Ive had two and they both sound better than any newer JB Ive heard. The duncan CS recently came out with a warren demartini signature and its supposed to be a JB with an alnico II. I put an alnico II in a JB but I haven't tried it cause it wont work in any of my guitars because its drilled out for direct mount.

The old JBs definitely sound different (better) than the newer ones IMO.

I do have a strat with an AH-1 in it, and it rocks my socks every time I light it up ;)

That Demartini JB sounds like a cool pickup too!!

Jeff how much did the Holdsworth cost you from the CS shop and what was the wait time?

Dan, I think the wait time back then (2005 time-frame, about the time I first frequented the DA board) was 1-2 months...it was given to me as a gift though, so I'm not sure of the price.

Almost all of these are way too hot. Duncan Alnico II Pro, Pearly Gates, '59, BB's, '57 Classics, etc for me. I get the gain from the amp, and prefer a clear, articulate pickup to send the signal. High output pickups and high gain amps take me to over-compress city. Sounds like a f***in' keyboard!

Ok cool! Im thinking of ordering one for my GMW and comparing it to the Suhr Aldrich humbucker. I reckon the Duncan will sound better in the GMW and the Suhr will work better with my LP!
