Let's talk wah pedals!

What style of music do you play and what's your go to wah pedal(s)?

Is there anything in particular you're missing in your wah tone?

I play variants of metal and probably way overuse the wah. I generally use the one built into my boss multi effects thing and/or a crybaby I've had forever depending on what I'm going for. Left foot, mostly. I never went down the rabbit hole with wahs as I'm content with my cheap toys.

I'm a wah tweaker at heart. I have a YouTube page up that goes deep into the wah abyss! I would post it to yall but I don't want to get flagged for spam. If you go to the tube and search 95Q wah Mods you'll see a freshly posted video. I call it the "JM Pinnacle Mod." This wah actually pays homage to the Dimebag Cry Baby from hell, along with the Cantrell, Tremonti, Bad Horsie and Kirk Hammett wahs! Go check it out and tell me what you think!

Stephen I have been on pins and needles! I posted just one post and got banned in 2 hours from that place. I couldn't believe it! I guess posting a video is damn near an unforgivable sin at that place.

The 535q is a killer pedal. I have the old 18 volt model! Built like a tank! It heavily inspired the mods I did to the 95Q wah.

Used the Dimewah for years.. until I switched to the Fractal FX8, which does the wah for me along other effects.

Still have the Dimewah.. my guitar tech from years modded it for me for true bypass. Still being it out every now and then to play around with it.

Cheers and good luck.

Lots of praise in this thread for the Crybaby from Hell Dimebag wah and I have to agree... One of my friends in college who I played in a band with had the Dimebag wah and he to this day has the best wah tone I've ever heard live.

I play metal (anything from 80s to more modern stuff) and the CAE MC404 wah is what I have on my board. It has two fasel inductors to choose from. The red setting is particular good for high gain distortion and has a very nice, pronounced wah sound with a pretty wide sweep. I did just order my first new wah in years - the Jam Pedals wah. There aren't many high gain demos with that wah, but it seems very well regarded. Hopefully it's a keeper like the CAE wah!

The Joe Gagan Wahs are really nice and tweakable. I like a wah that gives a very slight boost. Teese and Area 51 are both great too.
Joe's wahs are great! I've made quite a few purchases from him over the years and I agree with you, I like a wah that kicks the amp just a little bit. I went down a rabbit hole of experimenting with different halo inductors. Area 51 halos are awesome! I used to be hung up on Sabbadius halos, but I bought 3-4 of them and they all turned out to be really microphonic in my Clyde circuits. After doing some measurement readings I found out the Area 51s are tuned almost exactly the same, and they have zero microphonics! Love them. Also, the Dandy Job Whipple Halos are awesome as well!

It's crazy how versatile the Dime wah is indeed! The CAE MC404 is sweet- love dual inductor design! Hmm now I'm thinking...what if we take the Dimebag wah's sweep cap rotary dial, and install it into the CAE? mwwhahha!!

The Jam Wahcko wah gets a lot of praise! It's a damn good one for sure. They make some real quality pedals. No SMD parts. Not sure how that wah will sound with lots of gain and I'm unsure what kind of inductor they use in that pedal but, if you're handy with a soldering iron, pop in a red fasal inductor (it's just two pins) That might give that wah a little more attitude when it comes to high gain rock stuff!!

I tried for years steering away from the red fasal, but for rock and metal wahs...nothing compares lol

Let me know how that Jam wah works out for you! I'm intrigued. 🤟:p🤟

just checked out your Youtube, left a comment and subscribed to ya! I'm surprised how great the Fractal wah is! I'm sure you can customize its frequencies, inductors and everything in that thing. I actually just started a YouTube channel, and kicked it off with my modified 95Q wah pedal. Throw me a like and comment if you dig it!?

The Area 51 wah I had years ago was the best wah pedal I ever had. The most expressive. Demo'd it ages ago-

My current wah is a Joe Gagan. Derek and the Dominos "live" is what it's called.

Wow! is that 3 crying tone wahs?! I'm going to assume one is a volume pedal?? lol

I've yet to play one of these but the design is super cool! Thanks for sharing this man! I'm going to take a listen on the tube.
No, the wah is in the center, to the left is the EHX volume pedal, to the right is the EHX expression pedal. This design isn't for everyone, but it works for me. These days I just leave them on the floor and plug them into whatever gear I'm using.

The whole pedal moves, so there are no moving mechanical parts; some complain about the pedals sliding if the floor is slippery the pedals may slide across the floor, but I haven't had that issue - they make trays to hold them in place and you can velcro the trays to your board. That's another thing, since the whole pedal moves, you can't attach them to your board; I use a thick block of foam to hold them in place in the case, which I just had to sacrifice to use as padding shipping some gear I sold.

Cheers!

Mine is the 18 volt also.
I had the Dime wa about 15 years ago. That one was also excellent.

Dunlop John Petrucci wah; it is the DCR2SR rack wah in pedal format with the adjustments under the bottom cover. I play 80s style of rock/shred stuff mostly.
This is one I want to try.
