Hi guys!!! Been a while. I recently started a new cover band, a 90s cover band doing a lot of grunge and rock from the 90s. I will show you guys the list in a minute.
Looking for saome new speakers and a third amp.

My maine amps are the 20th Shiva with EL34s and a PWE Event Horizon. I am looking for a third amp to add some variety and was looking at Splawn, Fryette, Mesa Rectoverbs, Electradynes, etc. I'd be curious on recommendations there too. :)

Speakers, my main cab is the Bogner 212OS with Vintage 30s and sounds incredible. I have a Port City 212OS and ordered a Stone Age 212C. I am thining of trying some WGS, Scumbacks and Eminence speakers. Any thoughts or recommendations on these two cabs and which speakers to check out? I am finding I prefer speakers with good character. I don;t like super clean and neutral speakers, like speakers that would be good for amp modelling tend to not be my thing. I like thick and chewy while retaining clarity. Speakers recommendations? I was thinking Scumback M75/J75 in the Stona Age or Celestion Creambacks when they are released. They are a true high powered Greenback and cheaper than Scumbacks. I was looking at a WGS Retro30 or Vet30 and ET65 in the Port City. I had tried Eminence Cannabis Rex's.

I use Les Pauls, SGs and PRS CE22.

What part of the spectrum are you looking to fill out? The Boggie has beautiful cleans and a very open overdrive/distortion. The PWE I hear is stellar. What do you want? I mean, you don't really have a Fender Deluxe type tone, but you might not want or need that sort of tone. An old-school plexi type of tone is cool, in all its incarnations. And, a well-built VOX is a cool tone in a band context. Personally, I think a Victoria Double Deluxe or Tweed Twin maxxed out is a genius tone, not my foundational tone but a great thing to have in the arsenal.

I am looking for something to bring a heavy 90s tone more like Tremonti or similar. Although at the same time, a Plexi/JMP type that had two channels would be great. The Mesa Electradyne is one of the best new amps in that vein. I can't stand Vox and Fender, sorry. Just me.

The Vintage 30 speaker was Celestion's attempt to create a higher wattage Alnico Blue type tone - but using an ceramic magnet. I've sold all of my V30's and replaced them with the superior sounding AG's. Once you get "tuned-in" to the sound of the AG's, you'll never use a V30 again.

Tremonti type heavy? And you find you cannot get that with the 20th Shiva, mode in? Hmmm.

He plays a Triple Rec, right? Really outside my realm of expertise. :-)

Well I only like that tone for a few songs, we do two Creed songs and a Linkin Park song. Outside of that, the heaviest we do is Metallica, Tool and Alice in Chains and my amps cover those well. Mode in? I don't find that does much....still sounds like my Shiva, just witha little less mids. I can get about the same tones whether mode is in or out.

I always thought AG speakers were more for blues and clean, not hard rock. Most of the music I enjoy seems to do best with V30s and Greenbacks. I had a long conversation with the owner of PWE amps and he agrees his amps and Bogners are best with V30s. He had tried lots of Greenbacks, Scumbacks and AGs.

Load your favorite cab with a set of VG's. Once you break them in - you'll never go back to V30's.

Reasonably priced? Talked to a bud of mine and said they are nice but not for hard rock or high gain tones.

People told me for years Scumbacks were the best and that once I tried them, would never go back to V30s.....well, I did. :)

Scumbacks are basically Celestion clones - so there's that. It's all about what sounds good to you.

Pardon my candor - but your friend is sadly mistaken! AAMOF - there's no better speaker for midrange in any category - except maybe the Jensen "Blackbird" Alnico. Are they reasonably priced? I think they're under-priced considering the quality of midrange/top-end they produce. Remember - a guitar is a midrange instrument - it's not a bass! If you're doing as lot bottom-heavy tunes, then you would want to pair the VG with a G12H30 to accentuate the low-end. I think if you tried a good 2x12 cabinet loaded with 1 x AG, and 1 x G12H30 - you would love it! I have a 4x12 loaded with V30's that I can't wait to sell.

I don't know what type of effects you're running but with that kind of diversity in your set I would go with a channel switcher with midi controlled effects. A lot of those songs have, for example, chorused cleans w/ delay right into a raw heavy distorted tone.

If you do something like an electradyne you're going to need mutliple flavors of overdrives/boosts and fx and you'll be tap dancing the entire gig.

First thing that jumps into mind for a cover band is a midi pedal switcher into a JVM or EVH 5150III.

Nah, I won't need to tap dance. I have played these songs with bands before using a Plexi and one OD pedal and it killed. Lots of compliments. I only use analog gear, other than one digital reverb pedal. I tend to just leave my effects off other than some reverb on for some songs and delay on leads. Maybe sometimes I will kick on the chorus. I prefer one or two channel tube heads and a few analog pedals. I went down the Line 6 and Axe FX route and hated it.
My PWE sounds amazing for these songs and it has a loop/effects kill switch on the pedalboard which is nice because I can instantly switch on all effects at once

I used to have a DSL and have played JVMs and 5150s but I hate how they sound next to my Bogner or PWE.

You don't need multiple amps or pedals to cover these bands. I just like variety so I can change it up some nights. I could cover a whole night easily wig the Electradyne, my Sonic Edge OD, and a couple key pedals. A good friend of mine was in one of the biggest cover bands in our area and he used a Marshall JMP, a Boss Distortion box and a couple of effects. He got all his gain levels with varying the volume on his guitar and that is three sets of music from Michael Jackson to VH to Led Zep to Metallica to Pearl Jam to Creed to Guns n Roses.

I am getting the Scumbacks M75/J75 set for my Stone Age to give em another chance. Doing the Creamback/Lynchback mix for my port city.

Have to agree. The Alnico Golds are outrageous. Expensive, but outrageous. I was [this] close to loading my 20thA 4x12 with AGs, but the cost was too prohibitive for my level of play (c'mon, the drivers woulda cost more than the actual cab loaded   ).

Seems to me any 'standard typical' channel changing rig should cover those tunes. Couple of stomps, done.

The AG's actually have plenty of bass IMO. The Blue's are a little skinny on the bottom-end, plus the highs aren't as smooth as the AG's.

I have it narrowed down to a Tremoverb, Rectoverb and Electradyne. My Shiva and PWE sound sooooooooooooo good through my cab with V30s, I have no desire to change. I remember being at practice thinking....."are you kidding me" "I can't believe how good this tone is!"

Celestion Creambacks in my Stone Age 212C and Lynchbacks in my Port City 212OS.
