I've owned every brand of Guitar...
Nothing compares Tone Wise to the LPC,
NOTHING!!!

So I found myself at a guitar center and couldn't decide on a LP Custom they had or a really great 335... I ended up getting both haha... The Les Paul Custom is a 1983 that has seen better days, but plays great, sounds great, and has it where it counts. The 335 outplays a bit though so it had to come home with me. I had no intention of getting both but I threw a crazy number at the salesman and eventually he went for it.
I know showing prices on guitars is taboo, but does $1600 for the Les Paul seem alright even with the beating it took?

I appreciate all the good advice the forum gave. I said it before and I will say it again, you guys rock!

Les Paul's are defiantly killer looking. I won't speak on quality, tone, or value. For me I grew up playing a esp eclipse and I could never get used to the raised tom and neck angle compared to my brothers strat. I love the neck pickup tone on a les Paul over just about everything. Owning a Tom Anderson bulldog was on my bucket list someday because of the sunken bridge. I believe carvin does he same thing so it's a good choice for a player that is more used to strats with trems or guitars with hipshot like bridges. To bad the bull dog is no longer being made because in me eyes it was the perfect marriage of both ideas.

Gibson for sure.

I don't prefer Les Paul's, but if you do, buy a nice Gibson. Nothing sounds like them.

Nice!! Great score, I would say you did well on the Custom and topped it off with that 335. Very nice choices  , how do you like them?

If the wear is simply cosmetic I'd say $1600 is a GREAT price.

Dude $1600 for a Custom is awesome, even with a HS break or whatever. Think you scored fat and fuck a buncha Carvins. HNGD! Do you feel more manly? Your post sounded more manly. I think you're more manly now. In fact, I'm sure of it.

Just finished a band practice. I ran both guitars through a mesa mark III and through a Marshall Dsl 50. The les paul sounded killer... and I mean killer with the mesa on high gain. Lots of clarity and just really agressive. Both guitars sounded great though. The 335 is a different beast. No complaints other than my other guitars might get dusty. On the plus side, since buying the les paul my beard has grown to epic lengths. My only fear is if I father any children in the near future they will come out with epic beards.

Dude I love my Custom thru Mesas....I love Mesas in general anyway, but a Custom thru a Recto is bast aver for me. I feel you on the beard thing too....I was a clean shaven guy until the Custom, but look at me now:

I joke....I've had this 15 years.

Gonna get a lot of Norlin haters. Thinner necks, pancake bodies etc...I dig old Norlins and think they rock. I like the weight and I like the volutes too. Can always off an older silverburst if you hate it. If you've got the cash, give it a shot.

EDIT: shit that's really expensive for you guys man. Damn...I'd look for a better deal...around $2800 or so. Don't love the fact that it's been refretted either, but that's me.

Definitely too much with the weak Canadian dollar and yes the refretting is hit or miss. Keeping my eyes open but in no real rush.

had an 81 lp standard that sounded good, but I hated the thick maple neck and my friends 2005 lp standard faded sounded and played way better (I hated the stock tim shaw pickups, but I also hate the 498/490 that were in the 2005 lp)
I sold the 81 pretty quickly
my 73 lp custom has a very thin mahogany neck, and a deep but snappy tone (specially with the bare knuckle riff raff/mule set in it)
by 70-77, the tops were carved a little flatter, but the bodies had the regular thickness
both had pancake bodies with a maple veneer between the mahogany pieces

norlins weren't consistent regarding build standards, but the bad reputation is pure bullshit when it comes to tone and playability

I've paid about $1900 for each (the '73 custom and the '81 std) and that was already a great purchase at the time (5-6 years ago)
I remember silverbursts selling from $1700 to $2200 right before the mastodon/tool silverburst hype
it was among the cheapest les paul custom models around late 00's, only competing with 70's norlin clownbursts and neck repaired ones
hopefully, the prices will go down someday, but I wouldn't pay US$3000 for an original silverburst unless it was flawless (never... I hate flawless guitars :D )

Nice score man, and you made a wise decision buying used. It seems like you did your homework and got a killer deal on your LPC. I always loved the tobacco burst LPCs.

If you played through your LPC through a Mark III, that's pretty much my rig, give or take a couple of details. I'm always surprised to find how many guitarists DON'T use a rig like mine, but I like the fact that not many people have settled on that combination.

Congrats and play the color off the thing!

When you find that special Gibson that feels right and sounds great, it is hard to beat!!!

Thanks man, somehow I lucked out and found 2 at the same time. It's alot of fun going back and forth between the LP and the 335. They are both keepers for sure.
