Hey guys,

First time poster here.

So, a long time ago I bought a Carvin X100b head off of ebay. It was before they reissued them, so its one from the 80s. At the time I bought it Carvin was doing their MTS series so I bought and MTS 3212 cabinet to pair with it. Long story short, I had no business owning a half stack and didn't really know what I was doing. I blew a few speakers pretty quickly

It's been collecting dust for a while because I moved away to college and yada yada yada... but I'm wanting to get it back in action. The speakers that the cab has in it are Carvin G12-8 (70w, 8 OHMS). I can't find any of those anywhere.

My questions are 1) are there any speakers that I could get that are comparable and would go with the stock G12-8s that are already in there? and 2) should I just go ahead and buy all new speakers and if so, what recommendations do you have? I want the thing to be loud. Very loud. I'm trying to play stoner/doom/psyche stuff through it.

Thanks y'all!

-Stu

-what speaker's are the stoner/doom dudes using?

-sounds like you have CELESTION 70's-(predecessor to 75's)-good news!!! there fairly cheap!!! or go even cheaper and gets some 8 ohm 75's and mix them, or all 70's/75's or go V-30's. As long as you go 8 ohms-(same wattage as you seem to like to go balls to the wall)-check out WGS as well as the used CELESTION's or CARVIN'S

Email eminence and tell them what tones you're going for.

I find it hard to believe that you blew the speakers in a cab rated for 140 watts with a 100 watt head?

Sure it's not the amp that has the issue?\

Just get some used V-30's if you need new speakers

I had an original one from 1990 with the original cab. Sold it recently but before i did i hooked it up to a Friedman cab i have with all V30s and it sounded incredible.

You don't think a 100 watt head could blow a 140 watt rated cab?

I wouldn't think so. How many guys blasted 100w NMV Marshalls through 100w greenback loaded cabs.

Amps are rated at 100 watts rms. Which means 100 is the sweet spot. They are capable of more wattage. My Peavey 5150 cabs are rated at 240 watts to handle the power from the 5150 120 watt head. And yes, a cranked 100 watt Marshall will blow a cab loaded with 25 watt greenback speakers. If it's truly "cranked".

Yeah. It's embarrassing but I had the impedance incorrect, so that's what lead to the blown speaker.

But aren't speakers rated to where they distort? Meaning a 25w speaker can handle more than 25w, but it begins to break up at 25w.

-oh shit!!... We've all done them kinds of things, so what have you got for ohm-age on all 4 speakers? or the remaining non-blown ones??...

-as far as blowing speakers, who the hell can stand in front of a half stack with it on 10!!! Not me!!

Unless they're way overrated, speakers are eventually going to go if you play at high volume.

I haven't really played it since blowing the first speaker because i wasn't really sure how to adjust for that as far as changing ohm-age and whatnot. I just unplugged the blow speaker but left it in. I may have played it a little like that on 8 ohms, but I don't really remember. This was all years ago and I'm just now digging it out. Trying to get it back in working order and make sure I don't do the same dumb mistake again haha
