how are there so many Death fans here?!!

this place used to be a safe space for hair metal guys!!
Because it's REAL. Hair metal party music is fun but will never have the soul and intensity of a Chuck Schuldiner. His stuff set a high bar for heavy music that few have crossed. It's completely original material. Dime, Chuck, and Dave Mustaine are pretty much tops for metal guitar in my book and Chuck has the best voice so he probably takes the crown. *shrugs

Didn't realize it was the anniversary... I think Chuck was a talented guitarist but for me the genius was in developing the genre, which the later stuff departed from unfortunately IMO. Here's my playlist this week. Odd timing.

For me the genius is the vocal, first and foremost, followed closely by his compositional and lyrical abilities. Guitar is icing on the cake and some dang good icing I might add. Dude's voice is effortlessly guttural. It's almost soulful because you watch an Otis Redding or Sam Cooke and it's similarly effortless in appearance yet monstrously difficult to pull off for anyone else trying. I'll be your contrarian and tell you that someone that musically forward thinking is not likely gonna spend a career resting on their laurels making the same album a dozen times..

Spoke to Gene Hoglan at the end of a Death concert in Paris around 94 or so. One of my first real metal moment LOL. Can't believe it's already 30 years ago. Been an avid Death listener since as long as I can remember. I also was at The Eindhoven Dynamo Festival in 98, the one they recorded on DVD. Just before Pantera BTW. Phenomenal performance !! R.I.P. Chuck...

Hanged, drawn, and quartered is appropriate for such blasphemy.

Chuck was a god amongst men.
