Guys, if you have read the new Guitar World (Metallica cover) you already know that Hetfield claims to have used mostly his old Mesa Mark II C+ for his tracks. There is a lot of speculation as to the truth of this statement. For those of you who have heard the record and have experience with the VH4, what is your opinion?

I own a Diezel VH4, and channel 3 with the gain set around 1:00 - 2:00 sounds exactly like the main tracks to me...interested in your thoughts.

THANKS!

hey angel man... my ears hear the same thing as yours.... My theory is, that James is a MesaBoogie Endorsee and he maybe had a contract of something...... some say the mighty het doesn't need a contract, and can/would do whatever he wants, but again......you never know.....contracts are contracts. As you might have noticed, he has Rectos up on stage (as a show off o course) why do you think this is?

Same with the tuning room.....he has a Recto there, and Kirk has a Randall..........THEY KNOW they're gonna be filmed (for the MetonTour site) and the video will be seem by thousands of kids, and man.....that's marketing. Kirk used to use an Stiletto in the tuning room, and now is using Randalls....it's either 1)he loves to play HIS amps and is in love with that tone, and wants to use it EVERYWERE, or 2) he HAS to use it whenever he's playing there's a camera. you know what I mean?

James Loves his VH4/triaxis setup (has been using it since 2001, it's gotta mean something)... I bet it's not a problem for him to have not 2 but 3 Vh4 (the third one for the tuning room), and yet, he has a Recto, which he doesn't even use onstage.

To me, it's all a contract thing.

Neither James nor Kirk have an endorsement with Mesa. Fact.

James uses the T-verb in the tuning room for ease of setup. Zach is a busy man...

James doesn't have an endorsement? really?

but I mean....why does he uses Rectos (which are NOT providing the sound) on the stage?

I would get the "easy of setup" in the tuning room, hell I would do that too....if I get toplay a Vh4 every night on stage, just for variety I would use another amp in the tuning room....but the Rectos without use on stage throw me for a loop.

really?

then are these roberts? ( I know he blends rectos for his tone.....but I think they're James'

I see 4 rectos.....two could be Robert's, but I'm sure two are Hetfield's.....

are you sure? there were shitlaods of dual rectis on stage a few times i saw them. also mesa lists james + kirk + robert as dual recti users on their homepage, and metallica.com equipment list also states mesa products only - sounds like endorsement to me.

Mesa does not do endorsements. The best they will do it sell to you at net cost and offer road support
and freebies like tubes etc. Those recto's could be dummy heads with a working pilot light. :)
Whatever they used, I think they killed it. The only amp I don't own is the Krank.

then again, if they're dummy heads, why are they there? because they look beautiful? don't think so....

Maybe Mesa doesn't do endorsements, but it looks like they have a contract of some sort with Metallica, or at least James

You all do know that most guys running the board at mix down nowadays like to reamp, right??? I love hearing artists tell people what gear was used on an album, just to hear the guy that mixed it used something completly different.... Just a thought guys....

Mesa may have paid for the heads to be their, but that is not an endorsment/contract/deal with Hetfield. It appears more like an event sponsorship.
In the early 90's there were loads of ad's for empty/dummy Marshall headshells left over from all the hairband videos. Why were they stacked 10 high and 10 deep
in the video's ? Because they looked beautiful ? If Mesa told me they would kick me 20 G's to stand in front of their crap Big Logo three channel Recto's for four days, I would. Like everyone else, my setup would be behind it. :D
It's a gimmick, business and money. It does not mean they take it back to HQ and record the next album with the stuff.
It's a long running gag to make musicians run out and buy their favorite players crap and has been for decades.
Metallica and John Petrucci are the Mesa poster boys, but all the real gear they use was made 15 to 25 years ago.
The IIC+s, Triaxis, MK IV, Small Logo Recto's are not modern built amps/preamps and JP's tone blew with those RK I's.
The VH4 is now 14 or so years old, but people buy it for the flexibility and tone. I don't think Peter/Diezel Gmbh has that kind of money to throw at people,
and that is a testament to him and Diezel amps.

We should start a list of endorsee's and how they misrepresent their product.

" Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain." :)

EVH is the worst. He's got a 25K Frankenstein out plus the Charvel's and he starts the tour here in Charlotte
with a Wolfgang Special !!!!

I was at that show (Wiltern Club in LA)...AND YES they did then...annd often DO have Mesa triple rectifiers on stage. These are dummies, as are the majority of the cabinets. James does NOT have a contract with Mesa Boogie, nor does Kirk.

i remember in the SKOM video Hetfield said he loves the look of the dual rectos with the green led on stage.but that is all!?

Jeeez...

Mesa does not do endorsements, and neither James nor Kirk have an endorsement with Mesa. The last time they had the "wall of amps" onstage was in 2003/04. They are not there anymore. So no, there are no amps onstage. How do I know all that? As some here may know, I worked with Metclub backstage at some shows between 04 and 07, and earlier, but that's another story.

Trust me: No one in Metallica has an endorsement with Mesa, and there are no amps onstage.

well, most of us do not see that muchfdifference between an endorsement and a "promotion contract" or something like that. if they still have the amp-walls? i dont know - if you say they dont, i trust you. fact is they had them and they for sure got a lot of money paid for it - so if its called "endorsement" or "contract" or "commercial agreement" - doesnt really matter.

just my 2cent! i dont really care if they do this or not (hell, i WOULD!  ) and dont want to offend someone here (it seems like metallica-isssues are taken very personal here sometimes :D )

They are taken personal everywhere on the internet. :D

Anyhow, they (to my knowledge) did not get paid for the woa's, they just liked the looks.

you are correct Scott....I saw some pics from this past summer tour and the O2 shows and they're don't have the rectos up on stage.....maybe it was 03 like you said.
