Technically it’s a full amp, as it has a 1 watt tube power amp built in.

And my 2/50/2 to match

Rivera Knucklehead II
Not meaning to hijack, but what's your opinion on the Knucklehead II vs the KR55? I've always wanted to compare those. Any similarity between the KII and the K-Tre? They look visually very similar. I ordered a KR55 from guitar center once, which sat unshipped for a month, then they sold it to a local guy. Still pissed about it.

Always have a curiosity and appreciation for what’s going on inside an amp chassis. While just crappy iPhone pics, here’s some from my past and present collection:

Bogner XTC 100B (modded - top pic) and Classic

I’ve had the KII for many years now and it has been my main amp pretty much the entire time. Dozens of other amps have come and gone in that time, including the KR55. That’s not to say that the KR55 isn’t as good, it’s just it’s own thing and although I think it has the same signature Rivera sound, it differs greatly in options and flexibility and mostly how it is EQ’d. The KR55 has more gain available, but not as much low end, and doesn’t sound as big overall, perhaps due to it being 55 watts rather than 120? It’s also a 3 channel amp versus the KIIs 2 channels. The KR55 uses the midi footswitch, which can be a huge pain in the ass if you don’t like messing around with that sort of thing. It also doesn’t have the functionality I expected of it. The KII has a much more conventional 3 button footswitch. Much simpler for an impatient 52 year old geezer like me. I think the KR55 would be a great amp, especially if you were willing to put the time in to figure out how to really dial it in. I admittedly didn’t really spend a lot of time with it, simply because I preferred the KII, and was much more familiar with it. I think that Riveras by nature take some time to figure out. They tend to have so many tonal options, and such a wide spectrum of settings available, that they can be frustrating. I also think that a boost up front is pretty much mandatory to keep them tight. I unfortunately have no experience with the K-Tre, but I agree that the architecture (at least from the outside) is almost identical to the KII and it would make sense that it is an evolution of the KII. From what I’ve heard, the Tre is very similar to the KII, but with slightly more gain, a few less tonal options, and even more bottom end (good God why?). So yeah, these things have a LUDICROUS amount of low end. The KII for example, has a pull bass boost on the bass EQ knob, which is honestly absolutely pointless. Without the bass boost, and the knob set at noon, the amp has a ton of low end. Kyle did a video recently on the Tre, and I recommend watching it. He also mentions how the amp has more low end than any other amp, by far. I am still on the lookout for a K-Tre at a decent price, because I’d really like to compare them for myself. Either way, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Rivera amps, as long as you’re willing to spend some time getting familiar with it.

I really appreciate this input, thanks!

I have a KR7, which I understand is a revoiced KR100 - it is not that bass heavy compared to clips I've heard of the Tre at least.
In a perfect world, I too would like to have a KII and K-Tre to compare, along with an original K100. Missed one at guitar center for $900. Damn!

I've wanted to try a KR7 for a while too. I also assumed that the KR7 was based on the KR55/KR100 since it appears to be essentially identical. So it seems that Rivera have a couple of different branches of the Knucklehead family tree, one being the KII/K-Tre and the other being the KR55/KR100/KR7.

I would like to see Kyle get ahold of a KII and a K-Tre and do a comparison. That is unless I can get my own K-Tre.

Here’s a Ground Zero Hellion. Stainless chassis and all white PCB’s.

Components are Vishay MKT1813 capacitors and Vishay/ Beyschlag metal film resistors.

I know this is an old post but was curious if you hear a difference between the Vishay caps and the Synergy? I thought you were using the Synergy at some point so either the Vishay sound better or they sound just as good but are cheaper. Or maybe they’re more consistent from cap to cap?

The Synergy sound more vintage to me. I prefer the more modern dynamics of the Vishay 1813 for the Hellion. I have slowly gravitated to prefer a more punchy, aggressive tone rather than softer and compressed.

I have never made a decision to change parts to save money in my amps (I know you didn’t imply that). My philosophy from day one has been to pick the best performing and sounding components, even if they are more expensive. The absolute best possible sounding amp is more important to me than minimizing costs.

Oh yeah, I knew you would never compromise tone. (y) I was just curious for my own tinkering which is almost always simple vintage type stuff. I bought some of those Vishay but haven’t used any yet.

I like the Beyschlag too, if nothing else less hiss which is a big plus.

The Beyschlag are amazing.

I built a MOAB mod for myself with Beyschlags. Friedman played it at his shop and really liked the amp. He was like “what resistors are these?” He said he needed to try them after hearing them.

Hard to get the Beyschlags, though. Mouser has limited values. I had to order a bunch from Distrelec in the EU.
