I don’t know, I’m kinda racking my brain. Hard to be both metal and open/uncompressed. I have a KSR Artemis II that may come close, but I think it’s still compressed. I have a Fryette SigX and that is pretty dry and compressed. I know what you mean about the Shiva 20th, I had one for several years and just loved the low mid growl it had, that may be the way to go...if it ain’t broke done fix it.

Yeah maybe it's time to just get another 20th Shiva although I do remember not loving the effects loop, seemed to suck some tone, maybe they improved on it ? Lol

I have a mint 2018 Mzero. It's a really good amp, but I have a SLO also so I don't necessarily need both. I may consider selling it, if you're interested shoot me a PM.

Like someone says before, SigX is dry and compressed at the same time. Didn't sound as good as Deliverance or Pitbull. But clean is really amazing.
Diezel Herbert comes to mind too but is more on the compressed side. And what about Friedman Butterslax ?

I have Masotti X3M preamp Slave 100 poweramp (Mezzabarba predecessor) and it can be very open, huge, rich and mean sounding. 6505+ or Engl savage with its 120 Watts sound like toy beside it. I played only Nirvana preamp, not Trinity, but DNA is the same. Also agree with built-in boost, it is tube boost and doesn't fit modern metal needs but there are plenty of trusty pedal boosts, right ? I also had Masotti Monster which has feedback knob but I prefered middle position.

Blue channel 5153 is where I live for what the op is describing.

I found the Sig:X to be in a weird place. I agree with you the compressed and dry, I think it's a solid amp all around definitely a jack of all trades and and not quite a master, but damn, the cleans on the 'bloom' are great IMO. I think I liked that the second channel could be a second lead, Crunch or almost clean. I have not had mine out for a few years I will drag it out one of these days.

This times 100.

I want AC/DC ?? Gain at 2.
Van Halen? Gain at 4.
Want Metallica?? Gain at 5.
It sounds the real deal. Actually I like the slightly modern edge.

Its a great tone, I like that blue channel on the original. Its close to what Im talking about but if you have played the 20th shiva its just a more aggresive , angry bark in the mids. The blue channel 5153 is more smooth. Also even with a boost I felt it needed a bit more gain . I was hoping the stealth version that came out after would do just that but they added too much compression and saturation . I had the 6L6 100w stealth and it was just too over the top to the point where the blue channel lost its original vibe .

Owned the 6L6 stealth.
The EL34 is the real deal.
More bark.

I have not tried the EL34 stealth 100w..... I did own the 6L6 version stealth which was a bit of a let down . Not a bad amp but Im wondering if the EL34 stealth only difference is the tubes or if they made some minor tweaks to the circut.

They are different amps.
The EL34 really kicks ass.
More Grind. I read they did tweak it slightly.
Really more cutting. Does rock and metal EASILY.
Can’t discuss cleans. I don’t do them.

interesting. i preferred the 6L6 versions. different strokes for different folks i guess...

Fryette makes the most open metal capable amps I know of.

I think people here have nailed it. The Fryette/VHT stuff is as good as it gets for that open, raw high gain sound without ruining your financial situation.

I agree that the Blue channel on the 5150 III is also a great option. I'll always throw a vote in for a Splawn Quick Rod on this subject too.

Fireball 100, or a Savage.

I absolutely love these two amps, but I definitely wouldn't classify them as open gain structures. Quite a bit of compression going on.

Agreed. Both killer amps, but both are pretty compressed.

Looking for a very open and mean sounding metal amp. A couple years back I had a Bogner Shiva 20th , I fell in love with how mean it sounded and how it wasn't very compressed , it just had a wide open pissed off thing going on. Ive considered getting another one but as mean as it was its not really a modern metal amp, its great for hard and heavy rock like Alice In Chains type stuff but kinda stays in that realm.

The only Metal amp Ive had so far that comes close has been the Framus Cobra on the crunch channel but that amp has a lot of other short comings. As far as Bogner goes I now have a Helios Eclipse which is a great sounding amp but also not really modern Metal , it can do it but its more of a smooth type of tone . The Uberschall is an amp Im going to try but doesn't come off to me as being open, its more of a compressed type of high gain.

Any thoughts from my fellow metal heads and thrash riffers ?

Uberschall is great and fairly reasonably priced. The Diezel Herbert is great if money is not a big concern.
