Dual Rectifiers and 800s

After A/Bing them live in the band, I personally disagree with this. I saw them as two (both very good) amps that really do different things.

If they were the same, metal guys would be using SLOs.
The story as told on Tone Talk was, Randall gave away Rectos as a form of advertising, while Mike insisted on getting paid. They went through the amp parts and explained what was copied, the entire preamp, and the differences in the power section. Dave Friedman seemed to be in complete agreement.

I don’t understand rectos, it’s a copy of the Soldano front end, with an inferior power section that gets flubby in the bass, so people turn it down to zero. You could just turn the bass off on an SLO to accomplish the same.
I don’t. I usually zero the treble and just use the presence for treble. But I’m weird as fuck though…. And I have a custom preamp named after my penis so….

Probably going to get a cease and desist letter from Bill.

I know the story, and, the amps really aren't very much alike. The SLO is one of the best rock amps there is, and the Recto is one of the best metal amps there is, and neither is exceptional at what the other one does well. At least not live.

The JMP 2203 / JCM 800 is my favourite Marshalls I've played.

And the dual rectifier may be the best high gainer i've ever played.
I've spent ALOT of years and money playing amp after amp after amp and I think it's time I stop fuking around and go with what works and still excites me now 20+yrs on

Not a Marshall but my Splawn and Dual together is tonal bliss
I got a Mimiq pedal to jack around with, and the combinations of amps gets addictive. I have to unplug one every so often, just to get my head straight. It's dangerous.

You could cut an entire album on just the Orange channel.

^ oh mean, because the Orange channel can be tweaked in so many ways? Right.

Oh yeah man. It is a lot of fun to play through like we've discussed. I like how it spreads your sound out and fills the room beyond what it is normally like playing two amps at once. I run mine last in the front end chain after my ABY pedal and before the amps.

I'm not exactly clear on how they work but it appears/feels like there is a variable trim pot that swings slightly back and forth RANDOMLY. It also sounds like instead of having 2 guitar cabinets, you have either 3 or 5. That's how well it spreads your sound. It basically tricks your brain

I thought the Spawn and the Single Rec were pure sex and then I got the Dual

I gotta disagree with @GJgo here, tons of metal guys use slos live.

Especially lead players. Larry Tarnowski of iced earth used an SLO for every tour I saw him in. Mathias Jabs was also an early convert. Chris Degarmo from Queensryche still uses SLOs. Danny Spitz from anthrax uses SLOs.

I understand not thinking they work for metal, but TBH that's coming from a rhythm guitar centric point of view.

There's a reason all these metal lead players use an SLO.

Fwiw regarding Dual Rectifiers and Soldanos I had a Tremoverb for years, and the Soldano SLO pedal into my Hiwatt or Reeves sounds remarkably similar with the Deep button engaged.

I know an SLO pedal into a Custom 100 is not directly analogous to an SLO100, but the combo definitely sounded remarkably like an SLO and a Dual Rec depending on the settings. Want more Soldano sizzle, then leave the Deep button off. Want more Recto thickness, then turn the Deep button on.

I can see that, it's arguably a better lead amp than a IIC+.

there are some audible differences between the SLO and a Rec but as with many high gainers they can be made to sound more similar than different if running through the same cab and recording chain. the main difference for me was that a SLO feels easier for lead playing vs the recto.

i had a ToV, a revG triple I got modded by Dan Gower and a MW and only the MW with a Koko r1 in front felt ‘finger-friendly’.
